The Emirates Literature Foundation and the Emirates Wikimedia User Group are working on preparing a comprehensive guide for the month of Ramadan in the United Arab Emirates, with the participation of a group of Wikipedia users in the United Arab Emirates in the collective editing workshop on April 16. The collective editing workshop will shed light on the main aspects of Emirati traditions During the holy month in a comprehensive article in Arabic. The article will be translated later into English so that a wider audience of readers can view it and learn about the customs of the holy month in the country.
The article will deal with important aspects of the national culture of the United Arab Emirates, and information about its local traditions such as “Haq Al-Laila”, sighting the Ramadan crescent, Iftar, worship, Ramadan traditions such as charitable tents, Ramadan family breakfast, and many other pure Ramadan customs, rituals and traditions.
Event organizers will ask each participant to select one topic to research and write about, and all parts will be combined and published in one comprehensive article for all entries. In the spirit of Ramadan, the organizers invite all participants to stay for the Suhoor meal at the event site at the headquarters of the Emirates Literature Foundation, the Dubai International Writers Center, located in the historic Al Shindagha district.
To join the editorial workshop, participants need to register in the dedicated form on the website and bring their laptops to the evening event. Easy instructions will also be sent to all participants on how to create a Wikipedia article. All editors receive certificates of appreciation for their participation.
The “Kateeb Maktoob” initiative, affiliated with the Emirates Literature Foundation, has succeeded in increasing the number of Arab authors’ pages on Wikipedia, in both Arabic and English, by more than 500%. The initiative also contributed to the initiative team taking over the management of the Emirates Wikimedia users group.
