“Now I have to think about my mother who is destroyed”: Emanuele Filiberto on his father's death and his mother's pain
In a long and touching interview given to The Corriere della Sera, Emanuele Filiberto he spoke of the pain of the recent loss of his father Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy. He spoke of the inconsolable sadness of mother Marina Doria, but also of the future, of her and of her family, which now sees him in the role of head of the family. A role that will then also fall to his daughter Vittoria.
Last February 3, at the age of 86, he passed away forever Victor Emmanuel of Savoy, son of the last King of Italy Umberto II and head of the family of the Royal House of Savoy. His son, Emanuele Filiberto, told how his last difficult weeks went.
Interviewed by CorSeraEmanuele explained that his father had a bad time leg infection and who was forced to be hospitalized. The antibiotic treatment had an effect on the infection, but at the same time it weakened his body. In the last few days, he explains again, there has been a unexpected recovery and almost unexpectedly, then the tragic epilogue.
On Thursday it seemed the end had already arrived, then an unexpected recovery. We had the blessing of two more days with him who actually seemed to have recovered in those days given to him by heaven.
The one who suffers the most, explains Filiberto, is certainly his mother Marina Doria:
She is inconsolable because she has lost her love, the man of her life. They had fallen in love as boys in Geneva but had known each other since they were 12 years old. They lived for each other, an entire life: mom will blow out 89 candles in a few days and she's devastated, now I'll have to think about her first of all.
Now the role of householder it is up to him and Emanuele Filiberto knows it, understands it and feels the responsibility. She also spoke about her daughter Vittoria, who, thanks to the change in the succession law which abolished the ban on female driving in 2020, knows that one day it will be up to her to lead the house:
She was truly touched, she understood the gesture and from then on every occasion of meeting with my father Vittorio Emanuele was the opportunity to ask, to ask about the thousand-year history of the house. And dad, who was a great history enthusiast, began to tell.
