Elon Musk is once again throwing a punch. It's just what he likes to do.
We're curious to know what's actually going on in Elon Musk's head, actually. It is a special case. On the one hand he is extremely progressive, ambitious and knows how to create a car brand from scratch that takes a hard line against the established ones, on the other hand he is a scary guy through and through.
Now the whole 'established order' isn't that bad. Elon Musk is the long-serving CEO of all car brands. It's just like Dutch politics, the voter wants something different and innovation and votes en masse for the longest-serving member of parliament to crack down on the lazy seats.
You would think that Elon Musk would really like the addition of more electric car brands, but nothing seems further from the truth. This is evident from a message he leaves on Twitter, which is also from Elon Musk and which he has named 'X' for confusing reasons.
Elon Musk shares sneer
Elon Musk, who, like Lewis Hamilton, has a skull that keeps growing more hair on his forehead, recently spoke positively about Lucid again. That is the brainchild of Jim Rawlinson and should actually be a Tesla, but better. That is true in many respects, but from an accounting perspective this is not yet the case. The figures for Q4 2023 were not too good, it was reported Sawyer Merritt.
That is of course grist to the mill for Elon Musk. He has often spoken negatively about Lucid and could not resist sharing a sneer:
In other words, the brand only manages to survive thanks to financial support from Saudi Arabia. Now Musk has a bit of a point, because Lucid is not doing very well yet. A total of 8,428 cars were delivered. The goal for next year is not very ambitious: 9,000 copies. Well, that doesn't make much progress, of course.
Two more things to learn for Lucid
The big problem is that Lucid has apparently not yet mastered two things. First, they can't build enough cars. Secondly, this still happens at too high a price. That is exactly where Tesla has managed to do things differently.
By the way, we should not constantly make the comparison with Tesla. Tesla is more in the budget corner and actually does what the South Korean brands did in the 1990s: nice and spacious cars, very favorable prices, plastic interiors with poor finishing and excellent engines. Lucid really positions itself as a luxury brand and is (still) somewhat higher in the market.
