An Italian-only double
There second Ferrari’s back-to-back victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans followed by a few weeks the victory of another Ferrari, that of Charles Leclerc in the Monaco F1 Grand Prix. Two of the three most famous races in the world, the third is the Indianapolis 500, whose triptych of victories constitute the famous “triple crown” which remains to this day an objective that no driver has ever achieved in his career. In particular, Ferrari managed in 2024 to win the Monaco Grand Prix and the Sarthe classic in the same year. A “back to back” that had been missing since 1933 when another legendary Italian manufacturer won the two races in sequence, Alfa Romeo.
The increasingly large Hypercar fleet
The WEC championship, also thanks to Ferrari’s victories and the increasingly important number of major manufacturers participating in this category, is sparking increasingly lively interest among motorsport enthusiasts. There are also many drivers with a recent past in Formula 1 who have decided to try their hand at the 24 hour race par excellence. It is therefore legitimate to fantasize about the possible participation of a top Formula 1 driver in the next edition of Le Mans which will see the number of Hypercars increase by virtue of the regulation which will prescribe a minimum of two cars per manufacturer and the entry of Aston Martin with the long-awaited Valkyrie.
Leclerc suggestion
Charles Leclerc in particular could theoretically participate in the 2025 edition with the competitive Ferrari 499P which will still be fielded in three examples, including the “yellow” AF Corse private car. His eventual victory would allow him to win two thirds of the triple crown at a still very young age with every possibility of winning in Indianapolis by the end of his driving career, should he decide to move to IndyCar after Formula 1. When questioned about this suggestive possibility, the Ferrari president, John Elkannhe responded on the pages of the French newspaper “Le Figarò”:
“Our current riders are very strong. Some have proven that they are capable of achieving good results in both Formula 1 and endurance racing. I think of Antonio Giovinazzi who runs with us, and to Fernando Alonso. Nigel Mansell he chose the path of IndyCar. But Charles already has a lot to do in Formula 1 and we must not distract him“
