Eleven people have been arrested and five are being investigated for pass the MOT on vehicles with faults in Murcia technicians, reports the Civil Guard.
Among those detained and investigated are the technical director, inspectors and administrative staff of the ITV station under investigation, workshop managers and regular customers, for the crimes of documentary falsificationagainst road safety, membership in a criminal group and continued corruption between individuals.
Operation Mojita began at the beginning of last year when the Civil Guard learned of fraudulent activities related to vehicle inspections. During the development of the operation, it was found that in the month of July a road accident occurred on the A-33 highway in which an eleven-month-old baby died.
The specialists from the Road Safety Investigation Unit (UNIS) of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard verified that it was an accident caused by the technical deficiencies that the vehicle had, since its tires were in poor condition and the origin of the accident was the bursting of one of them and the subsequent loss of control of the car.
The investigators also verified that the last inspection was at the ITV station investigated a few weeks before the accident and that it saw suitable for the vehicle involved.
The investigation uncovered a notable number of fraudulent inspections, especially in vehicles over 20 years old and likely to have technical deficiencies, but who received approval in the inspection without meeting the minimum safety requirements.
Likewise, the agents confirmed that inspections were carried out in matter of secondswithout checking essential elements, such as seat belts and tires, and with irregular practices, such as the manipulation of vehicles during the inspection process.
One of the consequences is the circulation of these vehicles without the minimum technical safety conditions, with the consequent danger that entails for the vehicle’s own occupants and for the rest of the road network users.
The Civil Guard continues with the investigation to detect and identify more vehicles whose inspection has been manipulated, in order to guarantee the safety of drivers. The operation has been carried out by members of the Traffic Sector of the Murcia Civil Guard.
