Extreme E boss Alejandro Agag has announced new plans for his electric racing series. The off-roaders are now scrubbing over the dirt with a battery and an electric motor, but that could be different in 2024. The Odyssey 21 race car is now being prepared to run on hydrogen. The Extreme H can be added to the program alongside the Extreme E or completely replace the Extreme E.
“Extreme E is designed as a test for innovation and mobility solutions,” says Agag. “It has become increasingly clear to us that creating a hydrogen-powered race series is a natural evolution of our mission to demonstrate the capabilities of new technologies in the race to combat climate problems.”
A fuel cell (which converts hydrogen into electricity) would replace the batteries in the current Extreme E racer. The generation of hydrogen would be completely sustainable with solar energy. The powertrain change would mean the Odyssey 21 racer can run for more than 20 minutes.
It is not clear if Extreme E changes into Extreme H
Agag said: “Together with the current Extreme E teams, we will decide in the coming months the best way to integrate the hydrogen cars into the race weekend. Two separate categories, a full switch to hydrogen or racing together are all options on the table.’ The first prototype is to be launched in 2023.
