In the final stretch of the electoral contest of the 2023-2024 process, the armed attack of the candidate for mayor of Jiménez, by the political party of Movimiento Ciudadano, in the state of Tamaulipas, Pedro Salazar Rodríguez.
According to the Tamaulipas Security Spokesperson’s Office, the armed attack occurred on the Victoria-Matamoros highway on Monday, May 27, five people who accompanied the candidate were injured.
The first reports indicate that the events were perpetrated by civilians traveling in a van on the Victoria-Matamoros highway, who opened direct fire against the mayoral candidate and his work team.
“Authorities are responding to a report of people injured by firearms on the Victoria – Matamoros highway at the entrance to #Jiménez, after an attack by armed civilians aboard a truck,” was the first message from the Tamaulipas Spokesperson’s Office shortly after 6: 00 pm on Monday.
While just a few minutes later, the authorities corroborated that the injured people are members of a political structure. “5 members of the Citizen Movement party are confirmed injured,” they wrote on social networks.
Until the closing of this note, no deaths have been reported nor have details of the health of those attacked been shared. It is expected that the medical report will be shared in the following hours.

Pedro Salazar’s most recent social media post was shared shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. In this publication he could be seen together with residents of Ignacio Allende, described by the candidate himself as “a community forgotten and deteriorated by many rulers.”
This This fact adds to the attacks that several candidates have suffered in this 2023-2024 electoral process, directly and indirectly. The INE, in collaboration with federal authorities, have chosen to provide protection to candidates before the electoral elections on June 2.
