This Tuesday, April 23, it was reported that Arturo Lara de la Cruz, candidate for the municipal presidency of Amanalco de Becerra for the Citizen Movement (MC) party, was shot outside his home.
According to reports, as a result of the attack, the candidate for municipal mayor in the State of Mexico (Edomex), was injured in a legfor which he was transferred to an area hospital to receive medical attention for a leg injury.
The events occurred three days after the Orange Party candidate began his campaign in the area, adding his case to the violence statistics that have marred the 2024 elections.
Threat of “first and last warning”
It should be noted that the attack by Arturo Lara de la Cruz, was accompanied by a cardboard warning Lara to abandon the electoral contest, under threat of attacking the integrity of their families.
Images of the home in the community of Rincón de Guadalupe, second section, show the damage caused by the gunshots. The walls and windows have bullet holes, with perforated curtains and spent cartridges scattered on the floor.
This direct attack has increased concern about the security of the candidates in the central region of the country, which is why the Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico (SSEM) has begun to take action on the matter.
Likewise, the state leadership of the party strongly condemned the attack and demanded that the authorities clarify the facts, find those responsible and guarantee a peaceful and safe electoral process for all citizens and candidates involved.
Until now, It is unknown if Arturo Lara will continue with his electoral campaign or will be replaced. This new episode of political violence in Amanalco de Becerra revives concerns about the safety of the candidates, especially after the murder of Lara's brother in January 2023.
