Quito, Ecuador.- The relocation to other prisons of a group of 417 inmates from the Littoral Penitentiarythe most violent in Ecuador, left as balance 15 officers injuredafter the prisoners received state and federal elements with shots and grenades.
The confrontation between the inmates and the uniformed men takes place within the framework of a Ecuadorian government order to relocate 1,000 inmates to other prisons with the aim of being able to improve the infrastructure, as well as “reduce overcrowding and thereby dignify and generate a new rehabilitation process,” according to the director of the National Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty, Guillermo Rodríguez
The transfer of the inmates of two pavilions of that prison began on Monday and during the early hours of Tuesday 20 attacks with explosives and bullets were recorded against police officers and facilities of that institution to pressure the government so that they are not relocated. The clashes ended with five officers and one civilian killedall product of the shootings.
