In recent days, rumors have appeared on social media concerning a possible change of layout of the famous stretch Eau Rouge, on the Belgian circuit of Spa-Francorchamps. Despite the denial of a representative of the racetrack on this specific eventuality, which would distort the iconic left-right-left climb, some modernization works are still underway on the Flanders route, as evidenced by thedemolition of the historic Chalet placed right on top of that point.
Thanks to this intervention it will therefore be possible to create an escape route that would allow a increased safety conditions in that sector, unfortunately marked by serious or even fatal accidents like the one that occurred in 2019, which caused the death of the young Anthoine Hubert in Formula 2. According to the French magazine Auto HebdoFurthermore, the modification of the layout of the Eau Rouge would allow a reduction in speed of 10%, as indicated by the FIA precisely to reduce the risk of off the track or loss of control of the cars.
The proposal would therefore be to create one more curvilinear trajectory, such as not to allow the single-seaters to be able to complete the stretch at full speed. A test conducted by the Belgian driver confirms this scenario Pierre-Yves Rosoux, who, at the wheel of a GT4 BMW M2 CS, faced what could become the new configuration: “The new version – commented – which is much more angular than the existing one, forced me to brake 20 meters earlier. When the braking phase was over, I found myself at 160 km / h in the new Raidillon compared to 180 before. At the top of the hill, I was at 170 instead of 182 in the curve we have known for a long time. I don’t think this design can have a future. As we approach the Raidillon with high performance cars, the gap will be smaller than the existing layout. Moreover – he added – this version also poses other risks at the top of the hill. In the coming weeks, however, other tests will be held “.
