Easy and no more than two hours: three hiking routes through Asturias

Throughout the entire Spanish territory we find multiple natural paths, perfect for enjoying the environment and a day of hiking with family and friends. From imposing waterfalls to steep mountains, the northern part of the peninsula is home to some of those ideal spaces in which to practice outdoor activities.

The Principality of Asturias, between the autonomous communities of Galicia and Cantabria, stands as an option among which to carry out different hiking routes with cliffs, forests and royal roads. These are some easy tours with which to discover the wonders that the autonomous community offers.

Cliffs of Hell, in Ribadesella

The route of the Cliffs of Hell, in Ribadesella, is one of the main routes in the Asturian territory. This not only stands out for its simplicity, but also for housing multiple rock sculptures sculpted by the sea for centuries.

The linear route, 5 and a half kilometers long and lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes on foot, starts from the Cuerres recreational area and runs along steep cliffs carved by the strong tides of the area along the entire route. .

To begin the route you will have to go to the town of Cuerres, near Guadamía beach. From there, the route does not cross a properly marked path, but rather runs between different options and itineraries along paths and meadows, following the entire route marked by the coastline.

After a kilometer of travel, it will be possible to appreciate some of the most striking cliffs, such as Castro Arenas or Del Tomasón. Once the first two kilometers have been covered, it will be possible to take a detour to the left towards the town of Cuerres, but it is advisable to continue straight to continue the route.

Continuing along the route it is possible to enjoy other cliffs, mainly Palo Verde — which also has an islet with the same name — or the Infierno cliffs, which give their name to the route. After appreciating these natural jewels, two possible paths appear, the one on the left returns to the starting point of the route, and the one on the right continues to the town of Ribadesella.

Route of the hayedo de Montegrande and Xiblu Waterfall, in Teverga

One of the main options to enjoy the nature that the principality boasts is the route through the Montegrande beech forest and the Xiblu waterfall, in Teverga, where it is possible to enjoy the unique fauna and flora that the territory has.

The route, just over 6 and a half kilometers long and lasting 2 hours, crosses a large beech forest until reaching Xilbu, a set of three waterfalls that precipitate their water down the mountain. The route is fully signposted and has a marked track, which makes it a suitable choice even to do with the little ones in the house.

To begin the itinerary, you will have to arrive at the Braña La Puerca car park, located on the AS-228 road, after passing the town of Parmu. From there, and after less than a kilometer of travel, it will be possible to see the Leper Fountain and the mouth of an old coal mine.

Next, you will have to follow the path, which runs along the Fundil River, until a fork. In this way, to continue the route it will be necessary to take the path on the left in the opposite direction to the flow of the river.

After continuing along the trail, the waterfalls will be visible in a few kilometers. The route is linear, so you will have to return along the same path until you reach the parking lot. On the other hand, there is the possibility of continuing along the route until reaching the town of La Foceicha, with a similar duration as if the return route were made along the initial route.

Route to Paicega, in Pesoz

A route that stands out for its simplicity and the history that surrounds it is that of A Paicega, in Pesoz, which passes through the Manuel Monteserín García Palace – also known as the Ron Palace – and other old farms surrounded by a forest of abundant chestnuts.

It is a linear route, just under 6 and a half kilometers in length and an estimated duration of 2 and a half hours, which passes through multiple buildings and towns from past centuries among which it is possible to discover the history of the area.

The route begins in Pesoz, from where you will have to ascend through a forest of oaks and chestnut trees, which will later be covered by pine trees in the upper part. Thus, you will have to continue following the signs until the town of Sanzo.

In the same way, you will have to continue without detouring until you access a track marked AS-12, which leads to A Paicega. Along this route it will be possible to discover an old town – currently uninhabited – from the mid-20th century near the Salime reservoir dam.

In this area it will also be possible to enjoy panoramic views of the Navia River and the surrounding mountain ranges in the area. After continuing along the route, you will have to follow the itinerary until you return to the town of Sanzo along the previous track.
