During the recent financial meeting of Electronic Artsfrom which various news also emerged on the trends for the publisher’s near future, the desire to think about the possibility of inserting advertising in video gamesbut with a “thoughtful approach“.
The CEO Andrew Wilsonon this occasion, also reiterated the desire to experiment with AI in the development of video games, an area in which it seems that professionals want to invest particularly in the near future, but among the trends the idea of inserting advertising and promotional elements within the games also emerges.
It is not a new idea at all, but it seems that Electronic Arts has recently revived it, probably to try to maximize profits within the generally not so rosy situation of the industry, so it is possible that we will see any developments on the issue in the coming months or years.
Billions of hours of potential visibility
“If we think about the many, many billions of hours spent playing, creating, watching and connecting, and that much of this engagement occurs outside of a traditional gaming experience, we expect that advertising has the opportunity to be a significant growth driver for us,” he reported Wilson during EA’s financial conference.
So, he added, “We will be very careful to this aspect”, with a plan already being defined. “At the moment we have teams within the company that are studying how to create very thoughtful implementations within our gaming experiences”.
The “considered” approach seems to be an element that Wilson particularly wants to highlight, to avoid alerting players to the possible invasion of annoying advertisements during games. It is not yet clear how the issue will be resolved, but there is no doubt that the idea of advertising in video games has not disappeared at all.
