The abolition of the federal right to abortion in the United States is also causing great concern in the Netherlands. A new demonstration is being planned to support American women, but the moment is also being seized to fight for even better access to abortion in our country.
“This news is very sad and it touched me deeply, but at the same time it also releases new energy to organize the rules in the Netherlands around abortion even better,” said Eva de Goeij, chair of the first interest group for contraception, free choice and abortion. (Ava).
The decision of the US Supreme Court allows each state to legislate separately on abortion. Some conservative states passed abortion bans soon after the Supreme Court decision. And that shortly after the rules on abortion in the Netherlands were relaxed for the first time in forty years. The mandatory five-day cooling-off period has been deleted here.
There will probably be a demonstration somewhere in our country next weekend to reflect on the situation in America. It is the second campaign organized by, among others, Annemieke van Straalen. Last month she was in Amsterdam with thousands of participants, hoping to do something for American women. To show that there was compassion worldwide. That is again the most important goal for the next day of action. “But we also have to push through now in the Netherlands to regulate abortion even better,” says Van Straalen.
Now that many women in many American states are losing the right to abortion, this is not the time to sit back, De Goeij agrees. On the contrary. “The situation is very different in the Netherlands. Happy. But we also have to be on our guard here that the reins are not tightened legally.”
According to De Goeij and Van Straalen, there is still a major legal problem in the Netherlands. Abortion falls under the Criminal Code. This results in all kinds of practical hassles and makes access to abortion more difficult, especially for people who are not insured. And symbolically it is also a very wrong signal, according to these two women. It criminalizes women who choose abortion when they just want care.
From a social point of view, there is still a lot to gain in the Netherlands, says De Goeij. “People don’t talk much about their abortion experience. As a result, women can feel that they are on their own. As long as there is a taboo, that can be a barrier to entering a clinic.”
