It is already news like this: Ducati thinks of the electric. Probably breaking the hearts of purists, the Borgo Panigale company will go ahead with the study of motorcycles to be used without the aid of petroleum products, and to get there with an even more performance approach it will engage in racing. The announcement of participation as sole supplier for the Moto E world championship, organized by Dorna herself who sets up the MotoGP, is a truly remarkable novelty for the sector. Ducati will replace Energica Motor Company, which will continue to supply electric motorcycles until 2022.
Claudio Domenicali confirmed, as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore, that this operation will bring new hires to the Borgo Panigale plant. The new two-wheeler should arrive accompanied by greater synergy within the Volkswagen Group, with a particular focus on the creation of high performance accumulators. “It is precisely on weight, a fundamental element of sports bikes, – underlined Domenicali – that the greatest challenge will be played. Lightness has always been in Ducati’s DNA and thanks to the technology and chemistry of the rapidly evolving batteries, we are convinced that we can achieve an excellent result. However, to see an electric Ducati that can be purchased at the dealership, one will have to wait until the second part of the decade. This expectation is linked not so much to the current ability to produce it, already in our know-how today, as to the desire to offer our customers a bike that combines a good real autonomy with fast charging times and performance up to the mark. I am convinced that once again we will treasure the experiences we have had in the world of competitions to transfer them and apply them also on production bikes.“.
In short, Domenicali does not want to get his hands too far ahead. Meanwhile, the electric racing will be the first step to verify handling, performance, weight. With the arrival of greater reliability, efficiency and speed, at that point – also considering the infrastructural networks – Ducati will make its entry into the price list with a battery-powered motorcycle. Timing will be important: not too late for the competition, not too early for the current clientele. Because this aspect will certainly change for Ducati, once the world of Moto E has been approached.
