Aprilia celebrates
“All in one night” declared Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola, obviously very satisfied with having brought the current MotoGP World Championship leader and reigning vice-champion to Noale Jorge Martin. The night in question is the one between Sunday and Monday, the hours in which the agreement between Martin and Aprilia to race together in MotoGP in the next two years was ‘drafted’ in a very short time.
Jorge Martin showed up at Mugello after having made a verbal agreement with Ducati to define his move to the official team starting from the next one. Martin had even accepted the clause of seeing the doors to the red suit closed if Marc Marquez won the title in 2025, but not even this umpteenth ‘availability’ on Martin’s part he brought the Spaniard into the garage he has dreamed of for two years.
According to what was reported in today’s edition of the Spanish newspaper Brand – which opens its sports section with the title ‘Jorge Martin’s most frenetic 24 hours‘ – Ducati sent the new sporting director, Mauro Grassilli, to warn Jorge Martin that Francesco Bagnaia’s boxing partner would in any case be Marc Marquez. Grassilli took over from Paolo Ciabatti who is now focused on the Ducati project linked to motocross and as sporting director he simply carried out his job, but Martin’s disappointment at not having received the news either from Luigi Dall is understandable ‘Igna nor by Claudio Domenicali. After this ‘affront’ the definition of the agreement with Aprilia was rapid (the manager Albert Valera had obviously already prepared a plan-B and Martin has a very close relationship with the outgoing rider Aleix Espargarò) to the point that on Monday at 6.00pm the official announcement has arrived. Martin will earn less than the offers he had on the table from Honda and Yamaha, but he will immediately have a more competitive bike and has received further guarantees from Massimo Rivola and Romano Albesiano on what is in the pipeline in Noale to complete the approach process to Ducati, a bike with which he will still try to bring number #1 to Aprilia. Martin and the Pramac team have no doubts that in Borgo Panigale they will respect the contract which provides that Martin will always have the same material as the two official riders.
