The Consistory has launched a plan that will facilitate the cleaning of the Villa Dehesa Park for the collection of nests of processes. It is an experimental procedure with drones that will help collect nests that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The delegate of Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, Borja Carabante, accompanied by the Cleaning Cleaning Develop the implementation of the pilot project.
As Carabante has reported, drones will help in the tasks of detecting municipal technicians in those areas where it is difficult to reach. The project, which is being carried out by ACCIONA, could reach more green areas, such as the Retirement, the Casa de Campo, Tres Cantos, La Elipa or San José.
Since the beginning of the year, 72,907 pockets of processionary caterpillants have been removed, more than triple than the previous year, and 4,578 rings have been placed around the trunk of the trees, which will allow the collection of mature lepidoptera when they go down from the Pinos Cup and ceders to the ground.
The processionary caterpillar treatment campaign begins in the summer months, and always with techniques that are respectful of the environment. The most common actions to avoid pests are four: pheromone traps, application of authorized phytosanitary products by endotherapy, removal of nests and ring placement in the trunk of the trees.
The primary objective in the summer months with the placement of pheromone traps in municipal green areas is to attract and capture male specimens of the processionary butterfly. This reduces the mating of males with females and, therefore, eggs. In the current campaign a total of 4,259 traps of this type have been deployed.
Between October and November the application of endotherapy in the trees is carried out, which consists of introducing phytosanitary products in the sap of the trees through small holes, which causes the product to reach the leaves -which is the main one Food of the caterpillars- thus dying that they die.
The withdrawal of the nests from the caterpillars that have not perished are withdrawn between the months of January and February, normally with pole scissors or pruning platforms, something that makes it very difficult to clean the municipal operators, that is why which is expected that with the use of the new drone system, time and effort will be saved to locate the processionaire pockets.
Carabante has detailed that special effort is being made in the development of work in children’s and stagnant areas and in school environments, near the Park of La Dehesa de la Villa are several recreation areas and the Virgen de la Paloma Institute.
Likewise, from the Madrid City Council they remember the importance of avoiding manipulation and contact with processing caterpillars. Those who run more danger are children and pets, especially because of the curiosity they can feel when they see the larvae. The caterpillars, when they feel threatened, can release urticating hairs that cause injuries to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes.
In the event that some citizen meets a processionary caterpillar nest, he should not eliminate it on his own. The most appropriate would be to request the assistance of experts in the control of phytosanitary pests.
