Among dozens and dozens of games published monthly there are very few live service capable of breaking into the hearts of players and becoming money-making hits for years and years in a row. Even fewer are the games that start out as normal retail titles but which, over time, transform into real ones game as a service and they are able to survive long after the release thanks to the addition and development of new content periodically that entices old and new players to pick up the controller again and continue their game. It is the case of DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2the fighting game developed by Dimps which after almost ten years from its debut is still one of the most profitable titles for BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment and certainly the title of Dragon Ball most appreciated by audiences around the world, more than the wonderful FighterZ and the excellent KAKAROT.
What I will examine today is the version PlayStation 5 of DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2released together with the edition Xbox Series and available at a truly negligible price, even in a physical edition. Over time, the title’s DLCs have become truly numerous, but on digital stores it is possible to purchase packages, passes and special editions which include (almost) all of them, with the exception of the new chapter of history which began precisely in conjunction with the arrival of this current gen version.

We reviewed DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 with a PlayStation 5 code provided to us free of charge by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe.
Originally released in 2016, DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 is a hybrid between fighting game and RPG, whose story is set after the ending of the original game. The absolute protagonists are not the usual ones Goku And Vegetabut rather the members of storm patrol: Kaiohshin of time, Trunks of the future, our avatar and the avatar from the previous game. This team, which includes all the players and NPCs who populate the new one Conton Cityhas the task of keeping the timeline intact, a bit like the TVA in the universe Marvel and in the TV series of Loki.
Clearly there are evil counterparts on the other side — Mira And Towa— which interfere with the canonical events of Dragon Ballfor example by powering up enemies more than normal at certain points in the story, or involving characters like Tarles, Cooler And Slag which have nothing to do with canonical history.
Trunks and I vs. the Time Raiders
XENOVERSE 2 begins with the creation of our alter-ego: we will have to choose first of all racebro Terrans, Saiyans, Namekians, Frieza clan and Majin, then our appearance and name. By progressing through the game we will be able to improve their statistics, learn new techniques, further customize their appearance and interact with other players from all over the world by taking on cooperative missions or fighting in PvP. In parallel missionsthose that do not have to do with the main story, as well as in some other modes, it is also possible to select the canonical characters of the saga, choosing from the incredible basic roster which will gradually be unlocked as the plot progresses and ‘equal selection made available by the DLCs, which include the entire cast of Dragon Ball Super and even the recent film Super Hero.
The combat system is a sort of evolution of the one seen in the series Budokai Tenkaichi on PlayStation 2: with a view behind our character, we will be able to lock onto one enemy at a time and shoot in his direction to attack him with melee combos and energy attacks, also taking advantage of the most characteristic techniques of the franchise such as the iconic KamehamehaThe Makankosappo, Big Bang Attack and many others. Teams of characters can be made up of up to three warriors in both online and offline missions and the player can choose to play any of the characters already unlocked or obtained through DLC.
Overcoming the limit of Super Saiyan
The version PlayStation 5 Of DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 taken into consideration for this review is obviously the best of those released up to this moment (as well as the counterpart for Series). Compared to the version PlayStation 4 the colors are much brighter and more vibrant, and the 4K resolution makes the game visually spectacular, although the polygonal models have remained practically identical. This version of the title obviously runs at 60 FPS and fortunately too Loading times have been drastically reduced, although they haven’t completely disappeared yet as I hoped. The basic edition of the game is on sale, even in the physical edition, for just under twenty euros, while the versions can be found on digital stores Deluxe And Special Editionwhich contain DLC respectively Super Passes and Super Packs 1 to 4 the first, while the second also has the two packages in addition HERO OF JUSTICE. Unfortunately, the new DLC in the series FUTURE SAGA they will have to be purchased separately. Will we ever have a complete edition of everything once support ends? Only time will tell.

Who do we recommend DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 to?
DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 it is without a doubt one of the best and most appreciated titles for the franchise born from the pencil of the late Akira Toriyama. BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment does not seem willing to stop supporting it by continuing to publish new DLC despite the release of KAKAROT and the upcoming launch of SPARKING ZEROfor this reason, if you have never played XENOVERSE 2, we recommend you take advantage of this new edition for current generation consoles. If you have already had the opportunity to play the title on other platforms in the past and are curious to find out how the game fares on PS5 and Xbox Seriesyou can update it for free if you still own your copy and maybe fall in love with the streets of Conton City once again.
- Visually satisfying, despite its age
- Extremely fitting gameplay with the original product
- An impressive amount of content
- A little slow start and missions too similar to each other
- He gives his best especially online
- Low quality for the audio sector
DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2
The greatest Dragon Ball themed experience gets a makeover
Starting an adventure again in DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 2 was like meeting an old friend and seeing him age really well. Despite the years it carries with it, the title developed by Dimps is still incredibly fun to play and in some ways the best Dragon Ball themed multiplayer experience. The continuous support with new characters and new stories also makes the game always fresh, despite the monotony of the missions. The upgrade for the current generation is a big plus, it’s a shame that as far as the audio sector is concerned, the compression for voices and sound effects would have required better work.
