Why did “Dragon Ball Evolution” fail?
With its arrival in theaters, the film was bombarded by critics and fans alike, who gave it a 14% acceptance rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In IMDb things are not different and it appears with a 2.6/10.
At the time, viewers argued that not being faithful to the original story was a mistake. Seeing a teenage Goku face everyday problems was the hook that Fox gave to catch the public, one that he ultimately did not convince.
On the other hand, the film did not cast the right actors. Justin Chatwin demonstrated his acrobatic abilities in the project, but Goku’s characterization was incorrect.
The Saiyan is known for his warmth, innocence, and calm nature, all of which were replaced by generic teen movie qualities. Goku’s charm was cast aside.
Screenwriter apologized: “A very painful creative point”
In 2016, through the page thedaoofdragonball.com, Ben Ramsey, screenwriter of the tape, apologized to the fans for the story that was seen in “Dragon Ball Evolution”. In addition, he admitted that “it marked a sore point in his career.”
“That something with my name as a writer is so criticized worldwide is hard. Receiving hate mail from all over the world is painful. I spent so many years trying to deflect the blame, but at the end of the day it all comes down to your signature written on a page. I take full responsibility for what was a disappointment to so many fans. As a fan of other shows, I know what it’s like to see something you love turn disappointing.”shared.

“Dragon Ball Evolution 2″: why was the sequel cancelled?
In March 2009, Goku’s actor, Justin Chatwin, revealed to MTV that a script for a sequel had already been written. While he didn’t reveal any details, he did share that he had signed on for three more films. In the same interview, James Marsters (Piccolo) said that he would have a more developed arc and that the material that was going to be presented could give for a film franchise.
While poor reviews don’t spell the end of a potential franchise, box office weakness does. With a collection of $60 million, this did not allow him to continue with his story. In the intervening years, the filmmaker, screenwriter, crew members, and even Akira Toriyama have acknowledged that the film simply didn’t work out, so they saw fit to cancel a potential sequel.
