What appears to be thelast contribution absolutely by Akira Toriyama to Dragon Ball it is to all intents and purposes a perfect greeting from the author to his creation and to his entire audience, as is emerging from the comments on social media following the discovery of this detail.
This is an element that will be included in the most recent issue of Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 103, so it could be spoilers and we wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for anyone, although the element in itself doesn't reveal great things from a plot point of view, but it is particularly interesting due to the coincidence in which it found itself. In any case, if you don't want to have any spoilers, avoid reading the following.
The question started as a rumor, but was in fact confirmed by Toyotaro himself, or rather the main designer of Dragon Ball Super, and it would be an element that Akira Toriyama wanted to insert into the script of the last volume, which fatally also proved to be the author's last contribution before his sudden premature death, which occurred at the beginning of March.
Piccolo's greeting
In chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super, arriving this month, there is a scene in which Goku, Gohan and Piccolo go to pick up Pan from kindergarten. In one of the cartoons we see Small turn around and wave your hand, as if to greet those behind you, before flying away.
The particularly curious thing is that this cartoon was not initially planned by Toyotaro and colleagues, but was expressly wanted by Toriyama: the author did not deal with the drawing of each panel of Dragon Ball Super, despite actively contributing to the script, but reviews the storyboards and often indicated corrections to be made, with any removals or additions to be made.
One of these additions concerned the scene in which Piccolo turns to say hello, which apparently was important to Toriyama and who wanted to include it in the final version of the comic. Toyotaro's post on X shows the difference between the two versions of the storyboard, before and after Toriyama's intervention.
Fate would have it that the very image of Piccolo turning back to say goodbye before flying away represents at this point Toriyama's last contribution to Dragon Ball, transformed into a sort of general greeting, also considering that the character, from this perspective seems to be aimed at the public.
As we have seen, Dragon Ball super is now on pause for an indeterminate period, waiting to understand how to continue the work. We also refer you to our special article with the editorial team remembering Akira Toriyama.
