Dozens of immigrants of Algerian origin were transferred from the Cartagena Police Station to Murcia this Sunday after spending less than 72 hours in the Temporary Care Center for Foreigners (CATE) of the port city, in the El Espalmador area.
As this newspaper was able to verify, the immigrants were left in the vicinity of the Murcia bus station, as well as in Cartagena, as already happened on Saturday. According to the Jupol union, the majority in the National Police Corps, others were left in Lorca.
The Government Delegation pointed out that the bureaucratic system that immigrants who enter Spain illegally have to go through is being “quite efficient and fast.” Once the asylum or expulsion files are finalized, and without exceeding the legal 72 hours of stay in the CATE, they are made available to the NGO reception system.
“If the NGOs do not take charge or if there is no order for entry into the CIE, they should be released,” explains the SUP Police union.
The Delegation did not clarify how many immigrants the National Police released this Sunday, nor their destination. From the Unified Police Union they clarified that if there is no NGO that takes care of immigrants or if no court issues an order for admission to the Foreigners Internment Center (CIE), they must be released “because they are not detained, given that “They have not committed any crime,” they stressed.
Jupol warned that “the capacity of the institutions in charge and the National Police is being overwhelmed, mainly due to the lack of personnel and means.” In addition to demanding more “means” and “a fixed staff” for the CATE of Cartagena, the union recalled that it has been asking for a specific protocol for “four years” to deal with the arrival of boats.
The NGOs that usually offer a housing solution to immigrants avoided making statements and sent any information to the Ministry of the Interior.
The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, demanded reinforcements in the CATE from the Government delegate, Francisco Jiménez, to avoid “an uncontrolled exit” of migrants to the streets. Arroyo asserted that “there is no longer an excuse for not being prepared, the waves of boats are not isolated events.”
The Vox Municipal Group in the City Hall of the port city reiterated its rejection of CATE and denounced that “Cartagena has become the capital of illegal immigration, generating insecurity among residents and increasing the possibility of a terrorist attack.” according to deputy spokesperson Gonzalo López Pretel.
Already on Saturday, the Popular Party criticized the Government of Spain. The deputy secretary of Organization, Communication and Electoral of this party in the Region, Joaquín Segado, denounced that “the negligence and incapacity of the delegate of the Sánchez Government has once again generated a serious migration crisis in the Region.”
Criticisms of the PP
Segado also assured that “history is repeating itself” regarding the boats. He indicated that the total absence of foresight, the insufficiency of human and material resources and the lack of a specific protocol contribute to increasing “migratory chaos.”
