Former President Donald Trump has said that he “should not have left” the White House at the end of his term after losing the 2020 elections. “I should not have left, honestly,” the magnate said this Sunday during a rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania. “We did it so well, we had such a good…”, he cut off without finishing the sentence, to continue with: “Now, at each voting station there are hundreds of lawyers.” The lawyers the magnate refers to are his own who have already begun to challenge votes in the key state of Pennsylvania.
Trump’s comment comes amid Republicans’ campaign to drum up theories of voter fraud ahead of Tuesday, should Kamala Harris win. This Saturday the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected an appeal presented by the Republicans that sought to limit the vote count in this swing state. In recent days, Trump has assured that in Pennsylvania “cheating” is already being done in the electoral process, despite the fact that in this state none of the votes – not even those sent by mail – begin to be counted until after close the polling stations.
This Sunday’s statement even raises more alarms after Trump said at another rally in July that if he won the election, it would not be necessary to celebrate returning to the polls again. “We will fix it so well that you will not have to vote,” the magnate then told the Christian voters. Trump’s comment also resonates with claims he made to some of his aides just days after losing the election in 2020: that he was not leaving the Oval Office.
Four years after losing to Joe Biden, Trump still has not acknowledged defeat and has done nothing but continue to fuel the false belief among his followers that the elections were “stolen.” Even his vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, refused to acknowledge during the vice presidential debate that Trump had lost in 2020. Trump’s denialism ultimately led to the assault on the Capitol by an angry mob, which Vance described as a “peaceful demonstration.” Some of the people who broke into the building that day threatened to hang Vice President Mike Pence, who refused to comply with pressure from Trump not to certify the result.
Democrats have long been preparing for a scenario where Republicans try to overturn this Tuesday’s result if they lose. Before the assault on the Capitol, Trump’s legal team filed dozens of complaints against the results and all of them were dismissed in court. After the experience of 2020, the Democrats’ legal team is almost 10 times larger than in the previous campaign. According to NBC, senior Harris officials “clearly hope” that Trump will declare himself the winner before all the votes have been counted and say they have lawyers across the country prepared to fight the Republican party’s maneuvers.
Just as one of the speakers at the Madison Square Garden rally did, who called Harris an “antichrist,” Trump has described the Democrats as a “demonic” party. Despite his usual verbal aggressiveness, this Sunday the tycoon had a hoarse voice and explained himself very slowly. The image, more than energetic and vigorous, was one of fatigue. Over the last month, Trump has canceled up to six public appearances with the media, according to MNSBC. On some of those occasions, according to Politico, the Republican’s campaign team has justified the cancellations due to Trump’s “exhaustion.”
