Doctors in Odessa were given potassium iodide from radiation against the backdrop of shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). On Tuesday, September 20, the agency reported “RIA News” with reference to a representative of the Russian power structures.
“According to information received from our sources in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in Odessa, doctors were given radiation pills – potassium iodide 125 mg. They issued, according to them, at the end of last week, with instructions to apply if there is a radiation or chemical damage to the area, ”said the agency’s interlocutor.
According to the source, the drugs were issued not only to doctors in military hospitals, but also in civilian hospitals and clinics.
Potassium iodide protects against radiation exposure.
The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, said that the Kyiv regime, by shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, exposes Europe to the danger of a nuclear catastrophe. The Russian side again emphasized the need for an immediate and complete cessation of shelling of the station and for an objective investigation into the facts of deliberate strikes on the facility.
On September 11, a former member of the commission on biological weapons, military expert Igor Nikulin, expressed the opinion in a conversation with Izvestia that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to provoke a local nuclear catastrophe. The expert is convinced that an explosion such as in Chernobyl or Fukushima can occur. He added that in autumn the winds will blow from the east and southeast, in the affected area in the event of a disaster, Nikolaev, Odessa, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and, possibly, Greece may be.
Prior to that, on September 1, a military expert, researcher of armed conflicts in the post-Soviet space, Yevgeny Norin, said that the shelling of the ZNPP led Kyiv to a very dangerous line, threatening a new nuclear catastrophe. The expert clarified that a nuclear station can only be destroyed purposefully because of the strength of its design. However, Ukrainian provocations may well lead to disaster.
On the same day, the IAEA mission visited the ZNPP and then published a report. It called for an end to the shelling of the station, but did not specify the source of the strikes. In Moscow, the experts’ silence on strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine was explained by pressure on the agency from the West. Several IAEA employees are currently present at ZNPP.
Zaporozhye NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe in terms of the number of units and installed capacity. Since March, it has been under the control of the Russian military. Ukrainian militants are constantly carrying out artillery strikes on Energodar and the nuclear power plant area.
