Attack on doctors at Foggia hospital after Natasha Pugliese’s death: “My family did worse than Gomorrah, because my sister was killed by them”.
Tragedy and chaos at the Policlinico Riuniti in Foggia, where Natasha Pugliesea 23-year-old woman, died during a delicate surgical operation. Hospitalized since last June following a serious scooter accident in Cerignola, the girl had been transferred to the specialist department of the Policlinico to receive more adequate care, but the tragic outcome unleashed a wave of violence.
Immediately after the news of Natasha’s death, about fifty people including friends and family gathered at the hospital, giving rise to a chilling scene. Shouting “They killed her“, attacked the health workers, who had to barricade themselves in a room to protect themselves. Doctors and nurses, visibly shocked by what happened, declared:
“We were afraid of dying”
Tatiana Pugliese, sister of the young victim, expressed her pain and anger on social media, sharing the dramatic moment when she discovered she would never hug her sister again:
“No one ever spoke to us about death or very serious things, we knew it was a delicate operation. After ten minutes that damned door opens… I ask for my sister but no one answers me… I find the doctor and ask: is she dead? He signals to me. I screamed and put my hands on everyone.”
The sister accused the hospital of negligence, arguing that Natasha should have been transferred more urgently, as doctors had previously expressed doubts about their preparation for the case.
“My family did worse than Gomorrah, because my sister was killed by them.”
The attack provoked a strong reaction from the Italian medical community, which firmly condemned the incident. Anthony Nigrigeneral director of the ASL of Foggia, defended the doctors’ actions, underlining the high complexity of Natasha’s case and the commitment made by the staff to try to save her life.
“No form of violence against those who do their job can be tolerated.”
In protest against this and other attacks suffered by healthcare workers, the Italian Federation of General Practitioners has announced a symbolic initiative in the coming hours. The aim is to raise public awareness and institutions about the unsustainable situation that medical personnel are facing, exposed to a constant risk of violence. The increase in acts of violence against healthcare workers in Italy is a worrying phenomenon that requires a clear and decisive response from the institutions.
“One hour of interruption of all healthcare activities, from wards to clinics”.
