Culiacán, Sinaloa.- Within the framework of the Fraternity and Social Justice Conference, the Culiacán Municipal Institute of Culture invited the Dr. Benjamin Castañeda Cortes to develop a fundamental theme of our times: “The care of the elderlys as an essential component of an integral policy for human fraternity”.
The Doctor Benjamin Castañeda Cortes He has a degree in Communication Sciences from UNAM, a Master’s in Research and Development of Education from the Universidad Iberoamericana and a Doctor of Education from UNAM.
During the conference he offered through the digital platform of the Municipal Institute of Culture of Culiacán on Facebook, he explained that for three or four decades the number of older adults has increased disproportionately and it is anticipated that by the year 2050 it will have tripled, reaching 2 billion in the world.
The 17 million older adults who currently live in our country are experiencing an aging process, of physical deterioration in most cases in a critical health situation, with problems such as hypertension, diabetes, incontinence or degenerative diseases.

It is very difficult to attend to these health situations, he added, even more so if there is no comprehensive policy that also addresses economics, nutrition, leisure management or emotional shelter, as well as the impact it has on both the family and the community. .
He commented that in Sinaloa the real situation of this phenomenon is not known, neither the quantities nor the needs of the elderly. And of the 750 geriatricians that exist in the country to care for 17 million older adults, in our state there are only 12. There is no policy, no programs, and no actions. Some institutions have programs, but they serve very few people and only aspects of the problem.
INOCISA: PROPOSAL AND ACTIONS
In 2014, he and a group of colleagues founded the civil association Instituto del Noroeste en Ciencias de la Salud (INOCISA) in the city of Los Mochis, with the purpose of addressing this situation and seeking alternative solutions. They have been linked with institutions and in 2016 they held a National Congress.
Without support of any kind, they built their facilities and enabled spaces, from there they have focused their efforts on two fields of action: Design and provision of health care services and Training of human resources for health care.
They have geriatric rehabilitation programs and programs for vulnerable people, home nursing care programs for the elderly (to support the family), they have a Estancia that works as a nursery (for short or long periods) and palliative care programs for the elderly. in the final phase of his life.
“Aging is a complex and multifactorial process that impacts the family, society, and the economy.” The actions have to be comprehensive, preventive; it is important to raise awareness and sensitize, to appeal to brotherhood, fraternity, justice, concluded Dr. Benjamín Castañeda Cortés.
