The expectation of buying a new car is always accompanied by concern about theft or theft of the vehicle. Unfortunately, this is not a problem exclusive to large urban centers and this type of occurrence has become common in the most different locations in Brazil.
Blame for the theft or robbery of a vehicle is never the victim. However, vehicle owners can take steps to minimize these risks. We have gathered 10 tips prepared by the insurance company Porto Seguro, the Unidas car rental company and the Grupo AB dealership network. Check it out below:
1 – Attention when parking
A simple tip, but which can greatly reduce the risk of theft of your car is to carefully assess the place where you want to park it. Mainly in big cities, there are regions already well known for the action of criminals. Furthermore, we know that certain places, by their very characteristics, facilitate the actions of malicious people.
2 – Traffic lights
Attention when stopping at traffic lights, especially in more dangerous regions, is also a necessary practice. Small distractions can serve as an invitation to criminals. The ideal is to keep a reasonable distance from the car in front and not come to a complete stop. This allows that, in an emergency, the driver can start and avoid the assault.

3 – Search for safer routes
One of the main causes of vehicle theft and robbery is the use of routes that do not have proper security. Lack of lighting, little or no policing, weak internet or telephone signals, among other factors, contribute to the vulnerability of certain streets.
4 – Check the car’s closing
Despite being simple, we cannot fail to emphasize the importance of always checking if the car locks were properly activated. It is true that most vehicles already have electric door locks, activated by the car key. However, some criminals act through electronic devices capable of preventing this remote locking of the car. In other words, you press the alarm button, believing that the doors were locked, but due to interference generated by a criminal device, the locking was not carried out.
5 – Avoid leaving items inside the vehicle
It is important not to draw criminals’ attention to your vehicle. Therefore, always avoid leaving objects, bags or any other item that could be mistaken for something of value and encourage the actions of malicious people. If it is necessary to leave an object in the car, a good tip is to put it in the trunk, as it is not possible to have visual access there.
6 – Install darkened films on the windows
To protect what’s inside your car, it’s also worth installing a tinted film (insulfilm) on your car’s windows. In addition to increasing the privacy and security of vehicle occupants, it is a complicating factor for criminals to act.
7 – Be careful with your key
Without a doubt, using the key is the simplest way to gain access to the vehicle. For this reason, it is very important to be very careful when handling and storing your car keys, as someone may be watching your steps from the moment you exit the vehicle.
8 – Use safety devices
Today there are several devices and equipment that increase the safety of the car, such as car jammers and trackers. In addition, there are already activation systems through on-site keys, which lock the vehicle as soon as the driver leaves it.
9 – Alarms and power windows
This is a very simple but essential measure to protect your vehicle. Some alarm systems, in addition to calling the attention of everyone around them if there is something wrong with the car, are also capable of cutting the ignition of the engine when it is violated, preventing theft of the vehicle.
10 – Reactions in cases of assault
If it is not possible to prevent the assault, it is important that the damage is minimized. Knowing how to behave in the face of this type of threat helps to preserve your physical integrity, in addition to, in some cases, facilitating the complete recovery of the vehicle, without damage.
