In the current context of right-wing states, we see politicians like Donald Trump or Javier Milei charging, in the name of economic efficiency, against social rights of the so-called “welfare state”, such as the aid or pension system. It is ironic that this dismantling is being carried out by two men who are not exactly young (Milei is already over 50 years old and Trump is a septuagenarian man), and who sooner rather than later will be more dependent and will need care. And there is no one on the planet who does not need care: from the moment we are born, when we get sick, in our old age… What is certain is that at some point in our lives we all require support or care.
Until now invisible, the right to care gains strength with the advancement of the feminist agenda, and both the United Nations and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights are studying its imminent nature? recognition as a new human right. Yes, a new right that serves as a lever for State action, to move towards collective co-responsibility for care. And there is nothing more important for the dignity and reproduction of life, and that is the basis of human rights.
