Djokovic secures Serbia’s Davis Cup lead; Italy opens 2-0 against USA – ISTOÉ MONEY

(Reuters) – World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic defeated Dennis Novak and extended Serbia’s lead to 2-0 after Dusan Lajovic overcame Gerald Melzer in a Davis Cup finals Group F duel against Austria, in Innsbruck this Friday.

Djokovic, looking to lead Serbia to their first title since 2010 and second overall, had little work against the 28-year-old opponent, taking a 6-3 6-2 victory in less than an hour.

The 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner lost just six points on the serve and faced no break points.

In another clash, Lorenzo Sonego and Jannik Sinner secured emphatic victories, giving hosts Italy a 2-0 lead over the United States in Turin.

Debutant Sonego gave the Italians a perfect start with a 6-3 7-6 (4) victory over Reilly Opelka, with a disciplined display that included just one unforced mistake.

“It wasn’t easy playing here, but this crowd… It’s the first time in the Davis Cup and I was looking forward to this match — thank you everyone,” said the 26-year-old.

World number 10 Sinner, who made his ATP Finals debut this month, bested John Isner 6-2 6-0.

In Madrid, Feliciano López and Pablo Carreño Busta helped defending champions Spain open a 2-0 lead over debutants Ecuador.

Veteran López beat Roberto Quiroz 6-3 6-3 before Carreño Busta recovered from a lost set to beat Emilio Gómez 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 (5).
