Sinner number 1 in the world after Roland Garros? Even without playing if Djokovic…
Novak Djokovic’s surprising knockout in the 3rd round of the Italian Internationals, in addition to confirming the difficult moment of the almost 37-year-old Serbian (he will celebrate his birthday on May 22nd) still without titles and finals in this troubled 2024, it opens up very interesting glimmers of Jannik Sinner, ever closer to number one in the world rankings. The 22-year-old from South Tyrol could become world number 1 after Roland Garros even without taking the field in Paris (he is in doubt due to a hip injury which he is treating at JMedical).
Djokovic, reigning champion at the Bois de Boulogne, must reach at least the final to stay at the top. The 28-year-old Russian is also theoretically in the running for the leadership Daniil Medvedev who should however reach the final at the Foro Italico and win in Paris. The 21-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz was mathematically left out of first place.
Djokovic, was it because of the water bottle on his head? Today without balance and coordination, I will take tests’
Could the episode of the water bottle that hit him on the head on Friday evening have influenced Djokovic’s defeat against the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo? “I didn’t do any tests. Yesterday I trained well. Today, under heavy stress, I didn’t feel any pain but I felt out of balance and without coordination. I felt like a completely different player compared to the one on Friday. In the next few days I’ll do some tests. tests and let’s see what’s happening.” Thus in the press conference Novak Djokovic after the defeat in the third round of the Italian Internazionali, a knockout that came two days after the unfortunate episode of the aluminum water bottle which accidentally hit him on the head while he was signing autographs on the central court after the victory in the 2nd turn on the Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
“It was a truly unfortunate situation – continues the world number one in the press conference -. It was an accident. I felt a very strong blow to my head. I subsequently received medical assistance. I spent half an hour, an hour with nausea , dizziness, blood loss. I was able to sleep well. I had a headache. Yesterday it was pretty good but maybe it’s not that good. I mean, the way I felt on the pitch today was just like a different player entered into my shoes. Simply without any rhythm, without any balance. It’s a bit worrying. Everything has to be better for me to at least have a chance of winning Roland Garros and the Olympics.”
