Disney discussed some of its plans for gaming in a new report, which also cites the company’s deal with Epic Games to create content for Fortnite, saying the company hopes to deliver “transformative” new games.
Recall that in February, Disney invested another $1.5 billion in Epic Games to create a “new persistent universe” where Disney fans can “play, watch, shop and engage” with characters and content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar brands, among others. Disney and Epic also emphasized the ability for fans to “create their own stories and experiences” and share content with each other.
Disney and Epic have not yet officially revealed any specific Disney-related Fortnite projects.
Disney’s new statements
“We are reaching consumers in new and innovative wayssuch as partnering with Epic Games to unite beloved Disney brands and franchises with the wildly popular Fortnite in an ever-evolving new universe of games and entertainment,” the company said.
Disney later stated that its licensed video game business is the “largest in the world.” The deal with Epic Games is another example, they say.
With regard to The reason why Disney is investing so much in video gamesthe company said it is looking to capitalize on the “industry shift toward converged gaming ecosystems.” Disney will reveal its upcoming initiatives at D23 next weekend in Anaheim, California.
As for the projects already underwaythere are currently a number of Disney-licensed games in the works from outside teams, including Microsoft’s Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, Zynga’s Star Wars Hunters, and GungHo Online’s Disney Pixel RPG, to name a few.
