Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will soon be possible to access the Discord voice chat directly via PS5. Previously you had to use the mobile app or the PC version to start a connection with your PlayStation friends. The update will initially be available in Asia, followed by Europe, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East and finally the USA.
In a post on the official blog, the Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Product Management and Platform Experience division revealed what can we expect from this function.
How to join Discord voice chat on PS5
PlayStation explains that, to get started, you need to select the Discord section in the Game Base inside the PS5 Control Center (the same one where you control friends, start parties and send messages). There, you can choose a Discord server or group to join.
Inside the chat you can see more detail, such as who is connected. Additionally, PS5 will send a notification when a Discord user calls you, allowing you to connect instantly. The aim of course is to make it possible to talk to your friends on other platforms using Discord. Considering the push towards cross-play live services with PC since launch (like Helldivers 2 and the upcoming Concord) it’s not a strange choice.
Finally, from next week the possibility of share your PlayStation Network profile on any social or messaging app. You will need to select “Share profile” in the PlayStation app on mobile or on PS5 to generate a link or QR code that can then be shared. Anyone who receives this link will be able to add you as a friend if they are connected to the PlayStation Network.
