The withdrawal of Russian peacekeeping forces from Transnistria will lead to catastrophic consequences for Moldova. On Thursday, March 17, Elena Panina, director of the RUSSTRAT Institute for International Political and Economic Strategies, told Izvestia.
On the eve of the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, during a joint press conferences after negotiations with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, she indicated that Russia should withdraw troops from the territory of Transnistria.
As the expert emphasized, for thirty years the presence of Russian military personnel in Pridnestrovie ensured peace and security in the region. Thanks to this, both banks of the Dniester have taken many useful steps towards each other, the atmosphere of hatred and fear, typical of the events of 1992, has disappeared, she added.
“The withdrawal of Russian troops against the backdrop of an unprecedented aggravation of the international situation, the arrival of American troops in Eastern Europe, the activation and radicalization of nationalist and neo-fascist groups in Ukraine, which received tens of thousands of small arms from the Kiev regime, will lead to catastrophic consequences for Moldova,” she said. .
According to Panina, among the consequences one can name a sharp activation of ultra-nationalist forces in the country. If the Russian peacekeeping forces leave Transnistria, then the re-nazification of Moldova can happen in a short time, the director of RUSSTRAT added.
“The threat of an invasion of the territory of Moldova and Transnistria by militants of Ukrainian national battalions and retreating units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is also quite real, which could lead to a full-fledged occupation. <...> The most reasonable thing for Sandu would be to refrain from any demarches leading to an aggravation of the situation, ”the expert noted.
On January 21, on the air of the Romanian television channel Pro TV, the president of Moldova stated that in 1992 Russia allegedly sent “its people” to Transnistria to prevent Moldova from becoming independent from the USSR. The politician added that Moscow and Chisinau, among other things, are discussing the issue of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the territory of Transnistria, as well as the issue of eliminating weapons in warehouses in Kolbasna.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Russian peacekeepers are in the region in accordance with the decisions of the 5 + 2 group and maintain stability.
Russian peacekeepers were brought into the combat zone in Transnistria on July 29, 1992 in accordance with the agreement on the principles of peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region. At present, the peacekeepers of the Russian Federation maintain peace in the security separation zone along the Dniester, together with the “blue helmets” of Moldova, Transnistria and a group of military observers from Ukraine.
