The passport is an official document that certifies the identity and nationality of people, in addition to a requirement to be able to enter other countries and cross world borders, which makes it a fundamental piece for international travelers.
In the middle of any trip, unforeseen events can arise that lead to the loss of this important document, from theft to having it forgotten somewhere. Therefore, below we tell you the Steps to follow if you lose your passport while outside Colombia.
What should you do?
1. Notify the authorities: The person must notify the local authorities (of the country where they are) about the loss of the passport. If you later find the lost document, you must inform the authorities to remove the loss report, because if you do not do so, the report will remain valid and the passport cannot be used for travel.
2. Apply for a new passport: After informing the authorities, you must proceed with the application for a new passport at the nearest Colombian consulate.
At the scheduled appointment, the person must go in person to the selected office and present the documents required for the procedure, taking the photograph, registering fingerprints and signing. It is not necessary to take photos.
You must present the original of the current citizenship card or, in valid format:
- Password for the first time issued by the National Registry of Civil Status and copy of the civil birth registration issued by the Notary, Registrar or Consul.
- Password issued upon request for a duplicate or renewal of the citizenship card issued by the National Registry of Civil Status, which must be accompanied by the online consultation of the certificate of validity of the card provided by the issuing office through the website of the National Registry of Civil Status.
3. Choose a type of international document: Depending on the urgency and situation, you can choose between three types of international travel documents.
- Emergency: once you have made the payment, the passport will be delivered to you on the same day you request it and it will be valid for 7 months. According to the country's Foreign Ministry, this type of passport costs 86 euros in Europe and 123 dollars in the rest of the world.
- Exempt: this procedure is completely free, but it will only serve to return to Colombia.
- Ordinary: this document will be valid for 10 years, requires payment and may take up to 8 days to reach your hands. It is ideal for those who reside abroad. This type of passport costs 68 euros in Europe and 94 dollars in the rest of the world.
Keep in mind…
Before traveling, it is advisable to check if the destination country has diplomatic or consular representation and have your information on hand in case of loss of documents.
Remember that the report of loss or theft is made under oath and, once made, the passport is canceled and loses its validity.
