Olga Tañón returns to Peru for 'All Music Fest 2', which will take place on Saturday, February 17 at the National Stadium. The Republic had the opportunity to speak exclusively with the popular 'Mujer de Fuego', who expressed her excitement about returning to our country for the concert that will feature the presence of artists of the caliber of Víctor Manuelle, Elvis Crespo and Tito Nieves. Likewise, the interpreter of 'Es liar' told us about her nomination for the Lo Nuestro Awards, if merengue is still in force and if you would like to collaborate with a Peruvian artist. Lastly, the Puerto Rican singer told us about her relationship with Mark Anthonythe leading role he was going to take on in the biographical film of Selena Quintanilla and the work of new colleagues.
—Is merengue still in force? Can we continue – as it is colloquially said – 'billing' with this musical genre?
—I think so and I continue 'billing' with merengue, thank God. And people like what becomes the flag of a country.
What is salsa, merengue, Afro-Peruvian music or the Peruvian waltz become part of the culture of a country and, therefore, will never die, regardless of whether new hits or musical genres come.
There will always be an audience for everyone. Look, urban music has been around for a long time and now it is even turning to bachata, merengue, cumbia. This genre, which has become even more popular in recent times, is approaching the more traditional ones.
—In relation to Peruvian music, would you like to collaborate with a compatriot?
—I have very good communication with Eva Ayllón, whom I find to be a mother and teacher with a powerful and melodious voice. And we would both like to record a Peruvian waltz, We are already looking for the perfect thing to do it.
Likewise, with Daniela Darcourt and with Tony Succarwith whom we are sharing topics until the perfect one arrives.
—What do you think of the new resource used by artists like Shakira, who now send hints or 'dirties' towards their ex-partners in their songs?
—The same thing happened to me with the song 'Liar', 'Bandolero', 'Bad Boy', which was not for anyone, like the case of Shakira, who did it for her ex-partner Piqué. I think people like it and that's fine.
The important thing is that people heal from the inside too and if that works for them, then that's wonderful. That creates morbidity among people and that always sells.
—How do you feel after being nominated for the Lo Nuestro Awards?
—I think that one of the most beautiful things that one has to keep in mind is that it does not matter how many years of experience you have, but that they always take you into account in a place. You have to be grateful for that. Premios Lo Nuestro has been in my career for almost as long as I have, since I started with the group Chantelle. This year I will have the opportunity to receive an award for excellence and it is super exciting.
—A few weeks ago, a confession of yours that you were offered the leading role in the biographical film of Selena Quintanilla went viral online. Why did you reject the lead role?
—The role of Selena Quintanilla was offered to me by her father, Abraham Quintanilla, but I am a very realistic person all my life and I always say: 'Zapatero to his shoes.'
So, I was honest with Don Abraham and told him that his daughter spoke perfect English and I did not have that at that time. In this regard, he answered me: 'I'll put you in classes and a teacher to teach you the language.'
I replied 'no', because it was never going to be the same. I had an accent that his daughter didn't have. Although we were physically similar to Selena, language did not exist. No one could have played that role more perfect than Jennifer Lopez.
—In a recent interview you were asked if you had a romantic relationship with Marc Anthony. What is the link that unites them?
—Marc Anthony and I started music together when we were 18 years old. We became friends and brothers. Nothing to do with love. Yes, I adore him because he is my bosom friend, but there was never anything.
I had a difficult time with my daughter in New York, after a play. I remember that they told me that the girl was sick. So, I left before the show was over and Mark Anthony he finished the show and came to support me. She was with me and told me: 'I'm not going to leave you alone,' and that's how she was.
—Some artists point out that in the industry there are no friends, only colleagues. What opinion does it deserve?
—Whoever tells you that may have had tremendous bad luck. I don't have many friends in this environment either, but I have a lot of people that I love and respect. There are some who think that for friendship you have to be connected to that person all the time and I have never believed that.
I feel that there are real friends when there is joy, but also in moments of sadness.
—How do you feel about returning to Peru for 'All Music Fest 2'?
—Super happy and grateful. I hope you have a wonderful time and have fun with Olga Tañón's repertoire. There will be live music, lots of dancing and partying. Really what I want is for people to have a good time.
