In a speech to Congress, the US president harshly criticized Russia, said that Putin is more isolated than ever and that the Russian economy is already beginning to feel the effects of Western sanctions. A clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin this Tuesday (03/01), in his first State of the Union Address. Before Congress, Biden said that “freedom will always triumph over tyranny”, defended the harsh sanctions against Russia and stated that the pressure on the country will only increase.
The Democrat said Putin was more isolated than ever and that Russia’s economy was already beginning to feel the effects of the harsh punitive measures implemented by the US in conjunction with the European Union and other Western allies.
“In our history, we’ve learned this lesson: when dictators invade a country, they have to pay for it,” Biden said.
The American president also said in his speech that Putin thought he could divide the West and that NATO would not react. However, according to Biden, Putin made a serious miscalculation. “We were ready,” the Democrat said. “Putin’s war was premeditated and unprovoked,” Biden warned.
As a symbolic gesture of support, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, was invited to the president’s speech and remained alongside First Lady Jill.
US will not send troops to Ukraine
Biden recalled that the US has given Ukraine more than $1 billion in direct assistance in recent times and that Washington will continue to support the Ukrainian people.
However, the president reaffirmed that the US will not send troops to Ukraine. However, he assured that in case Putin decides to continue to move west, “the United States and its allies will defend every inch of the territory of the NATO countries”.
Biden confirmed the deployment of troops, fighter planes and military ships to protect Atlantic Alliance countries, including Ukraine’s neighboring countries Poland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Closing the airspace
The American president took advantage of the speech to announce that the United States will close airspace to Russian aircraft and airlines, including private jets of Russian oligarchs.
“We will join our allies in further isolating Russia and putting additional pressure on the economy,” he said.
A total of 37 countries, including all EU members plus the UK and Canada, had already announced the closure of airspace to Russians.
On Monday, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said this would not be an easy decision, as it could lead Russia to take a similar step.
Biden also said that the country will pursue the crimes of Russian oligarchs, and that the US Department of Justice is forming a working group for this purpose.
“We are teaming up with our European allies to find and seize their yachts, luxury apartments and private planes,” Biden announced.
