Genoa – They are 90 thousand cases of diabetes have been reported in Liguria, but 10% of patients do not know they are affected by the disease, therefore they are more likely to develop retinal and macular problems. These are the data that emerged at Palazzo Tursi from the presentation of the results of the prevention campaign “Beware of diabetes, do not lose your sight” to sensitize diabetics on the importance of carrying out eye examinations. The mayor Marco Bucci, the deputy mayor Massimo Niccolò, the president of the Macula Committee Massimo Ligustro, the directors of the eye clinic of the San Martino hospital and of the diabetology of the Genoese ASL3 Carlo Enrico Traverso and Enrico Torre participated.
Eight hundred telephone calls received, 103 visits made and 30 diagnoses of retinal / macular problems identified in time: these are the results obtained at the end of 2021 from the prevention campaign “Beware of diabetes, don’t lose your sight”.
In Genoa it is estimated that there are at least 2,000 diabetics with retinopathy who have never undergone an eye examination. They risk developing progressive and disabling eye diseases. “It is an important awareness campaign because our city wants to be a guide in the early diagnosis of vision problems related to diabetes, – underlines the mayor Marco Bucci – as a patient I can tell you that I too suffer from retinopathy in the right eye, I guarantee you that it is something that when one realizes it is already too late, citizens must understand the importance of screening “.
The project will be replicated in 2022 with the “Eye to Diabetes 2.0” campaign, all Genoese with diabetes for at least 5 years who have never had an eye examination are invited to call 010-2721373 active from Monday to Friday from 9 to 18 to book a free visit.
