This came during a meeting between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed El-Manfi, on the sidelines of the COMESA summit in the new administrative capital.
The official spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic, Ambassador Bassam Radi, stated that the President welcomed Mohamed El-Manfi’s visit to Cairo, praising his recent participation in the Paris Conference, which included stressing the need to hold national elections on their scheduled date in December 2021, which gave positive messages about support for the Presidential Council in Libya the democratic process, and his commitment to implementing the provisions of the national road map despite the multiple internal challenges in this regard.
Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s full support for the political process to settle the Libyan crisis, and its keenness to strengthen close coordination with the Libyan side during the current period in this regard.
For his part, the President of the Libyan Presidential Council congratulated the Egyptian President on assuming the presidency of COMESA, expressing his aspiration that this presidency would contribute to advancing the process of development and regional integration, and affirming his country’s strong appreciation at the official and popular levels for the vital Egyptian role led by the President in restoring peace and stability. In Libya, in light of the brotherly and historical relations between the two brotherly countries, and his keenness to continue intensive consultations with Egypt in order to hold the elections in Libya on time to ensure a better future for Libyan citizens.
The spokesperson added that the meeting witnessed a review of efforts to restore security and stability in the Libyan state, where President Sisi stressed that Egypt’s main goal is to achieve peace and security for the brothers in Libya and activate the free will of its people, and that the higher interest of the Libyan state comes first, and stems from the principles of preserving territorial integrity.
