Mexico.- On the occasion of the International Childhood Cancer Day, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), highlighted that despite the challenge posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico, the mortality of cancer patients was reduced by 20%.
Through a statement, the IMSS reported that through the Oncology Care Coordination that privileges timely diagnosis, pathology care, seeks to achieve standards of 90% survival in pediatric oncology patients.
In this sense, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, head of the Oncology Care Coordinationpointed out that the IMSS has 35 ONCOCREAN in the country with human, physical and medication resources to work for the cure of these patients.
López Aguilar highlighted that in 2021 the IMSS registered a 20 percent decrease in mortality, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that while there is no way to prevent cancer in children, it is curable with early diagnosis.
He added that, in the pediatric population, the most frequent cancers are leukemia, brain and bone tumors, which cannot be prevented and are aggressive in 90% of cases due to generic factors, but are partially curable if there is a early diagnosis.
He explained that cancer is the second cause of mortality in the pediatric population between five and 14 years of age. He added that there are two important stages of involvement, leukemias between two and 10 years and brain tumors between six and 10 years, while bone cancer between 10 and 15 years.

López Aguilar recommended to parents the technique of hugging their children, because by doing so they touch their little neck and realize if they have a swollen node, if they feel their abdomen they can identify if they have a mass, or by touching their little bones feel if there is a tumor for timely diagnosis and treatment.
