A dozen abandoned houses in Espoo have been destroyed by fires in a short period of time. The police are investigating the events.
in Espoo a chain of special events can be seen: a dozen abandoned houses have burned in the city in two weeks.
According to the police department of Western Uusimaa, uninhabited houses have caught fire in a fairly small area in the center of Espoo and nearby areas.
The latest of the fires broke out on Thursday evening in the old building of VPK Tuomarilan Palotie. Post-extinguishing work is still ongoing.
It burned on Wednesday old detached house In the river crash, and on Tuesday adjacent building. Earlier in March, there was a fire in the same place 100-square-meter warehouse building. Fires have also occurred on Kulovalkeantie in Tuomarila and Martinsillantie.
The Western Uusimaa Situation Center commented to HS on Wednesday that the fires are suspected to have been set on purpose.
In attendance fire chief Tuukka Tuuli tells HS that he cannot confirm the intentionality and connection of the fires.
“It cannot be ruled out, but it cannot be said that this is the case either.”
Tuuli states right after that he does smell something burning in the matter, because it’s rare for so many abandoned houses to spontaneously combust within a short period of time in a small geographical area.
The police are investigating the fires.
According to Tuuli, similar series of fires have happened before. In addition to possible arson, Espoo has been plagued by car arson for years.
Tuuli reminds us that even if it’s an abandoned house, the fire can also spread to residential areas. In addition, fires employ the fire department, which may be away from other targets.
“Someone might think that it’s just an abandoned house, what does it matter if we play a little in it. I wish people would understand the dangers and risks involved.”
Burnings also leave behind the risk of collapse and possible exposure to compounds, as old houses may contain asbestos.
There is no idea whether one or several people are behind the fires.
In the judgeship According to the West Uusimaa rescue service, many people gathered to watch the fire that broke out in the old building of VPK on Thursday.
The rescuers and the police had to repeatedly urge those who arrived at the scene to move away from the burning building and the equipment of the rescue service, the rescue service said in a press release.
The fire marshal on duty commented on the incident to STT the night before Friday Peik Swan said people came quite close to the building. According to him, it took time to instruct people further away from the building.
