Federal deputy Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO) defended “freedom” and “democracy” in a speech in English at the event called by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Sunday, 21. In day-to-day work in Congress , the parliamentarian usually responds to requests for information made by the press and requests for accountability regarding his work with cake recipes.
O Estadão He sought the parliamentarian's advice this Monday, the 22nd, but also received a message with culinary ingredients in response.
The parliamentarian, who is a pre-candidate for mayor of Goiânia, said he spoke in another language because businessman Elon Musk, owner of the social network X, was “watching” the demonstration held on Copacabana Beach, in Rio. Gayer was a professor of English before being elected to the Chamber.
“It’s a message to the world. Look at what is happening in Brazil today. What you see here are freedom-loving people fighting for democracy. They are people who love freedom and do not give up, who do not bow down to dictatorship. They are people willing to give their lives and who will never give up. We will be the hope of the world”, said the Bolsonaro ally.
Since taking office as federal deputy, in February last year, Gayer has sent out cake recipes in the face of any question from the press, which involves parliamentary performance, issues in the Judiciary and even his pre-candidacy in this year's elections. The measure harks back to the period of the military dictatorship (1964-1985), when revenues replaced materials censored by the government.
At the time, reports that reported events about national politics were exchanged for cake recipes or literary poems in the newspapers. The practice was a way for press outlets to protest against the restriction of freedom of information.
At the end of June, Gayer linked the existence of dictatorships in African countries to the lack of “cognitive capacity” of the continent's population. Responding to the host of a podcast who stated that the IQ of Africans was lower than that of monkeys, the parliamentarian said that “Brazil is dumbed down” and “follows the same path as African nations”.
At the time, the Estadão contacted the parliamentarian to find out his version of what happened, but he sent another cake recipe. In a video on X, Gayer denied having said racist phrases and said that the repercussion of the statement on the podcast was motivated by a “distortion” made by the press.
The statement led to a request for the parliamentarian's impeachment for racism in the Chamber's Ethics Council. The proposal was never voted on by the board. In November, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) filed a complaint with the STF asking for Gayer's conviction for insult and racism and the revocation of his mandate, in case of a sentence of more than four years in prison. The case is in the office of the rapporteur, minister Cármen Lúcia, and has not yet been concluded.
