The French actor Gerard Depardieu He will not appear this Monday at the trial in which he is accused of sexual assault and abuse for being ill and is going to request a six-month postponement of the process, as announced by his lawyer, Jeremy Assous.
“The doctors have ordered him to be banned from appearing today, but have indicated that with adapted treatment, he could appear in six months,” said lawyer Jérémie Assous, upon entering the courtroom.
Shortly before, in a statement to public radio FranceInfor, Assous had declared: “Gérard Depardieu is very affected (due to the illness) and unfortunately his lawyer has prohibited him from appearing at the hearing. For that reason, he is going to request a postponement to a later date, in order to be able to attend, because Gérard Depardieu wants to express himself.”
The lawyer has emphasized in his radio intervention that for Depardieu “it is very important” to give a statement, since “for several years” he has been the subject of “a certain number of accusationswhich are systematically collected in good faith by the press”.
Assous has not detailed what illness the actor is suffering from but has hinted that he has not been well for several days. Furthermore, he specified that, when last Friday he announced that the accused had “the intention” of appearing at the trial, it was because they were waiting for “the doctor to confirm that he could attend. Unfortunately his health does not allow it“.
The trial refers to the complaints of two workers from the filming of the film Les Volets Verts, a decorator and an assistant director, who sued Depardieu for touching and obscene comments.
The trial will address various crimes of a sexual nature by the actor against two women, although it could only be the first in the long list of complaints against him.
