Demon Turf – Review, on the hunt for glory in a crazy adventure

In the’preview last month we spoke positively to you about a promising 3D platformer made by the guys of Fabraz and published by Playtonic. The game immediately demonstrated simple but captivating characters along with a particular setting, which translate into a light tone and a little veiled quotationism. Today is therefore the time of review by Demon Turf, to find out if all these elements can keep Beebz’s journey to conquer hell on its feet!

Looking for allies

The story of the game tells of one young demon girl which, with “only” a thousand years of age, sees as its main purpose that of becoming Queen of his world. In order to fulfill his destiny, however, he must defeat and take control of all the gangs of the place, earning the right to meet and fight against the demon king in person. Although the narrative is not the main focus, we confirm during the flow of the game the presence of some small twist that maintains that light and over the top tone that is savored from the first minutes.

We congratulate the script and the direction of the dubbing, which demonstrate a well-elaborated quotationism that fails to prevail over the characterization of the characters. In fact, it is not uncommon to observe moments in which real cult of the sector are honored in some way, but everything seems absolutely natural and not forced at all. In the same way, the jokes are funny and manage to be appreciated by both the little ones and an older audience.

Demon Turf in fact succeeds in the task of striking a wide range of audiences, from the least to the most experienced, thus adapting to the different type of users possibly interested. However, we point out the only presence of the English language, both written and spoken, which inevitably risks substantially reducing its usability.

In this review we have strongly noted how the beating heart of Demon Turf both yours gameplay. From the very first minutes, the game puts us in control of the young protagonist with extremely standard skills for the genre, elements now very common to gamers such as walking or double jumping. This attachment to tradition it is the second soul of the entire product, since throughout the adventure it does not seek in any way to innovate the genre.

The structure of the levels is therefore predictable, which are divided into linear paths in which it is necessary to collect the collectibles on duty, both the mandatory ones to continue the adventure and the totally secondary ones.

A joy for lovers of completism

In Demon Turf we noticed several elements that make up the adventure. For starters, the levels feature a high replay value thanks to the many secondary activities present within them. In addition to having to collect the aforementioned cakes, it is possible to face a more difficult version of all the stages, or to rush to beat a set time.

Each of them therefore offers an always different approach to face everything, managing not to make you feel that feeling of repetitiveness. We must also compliment the level design very varied that characterizes each stage, not so much for the settings – predictable for the genre – as for their construction.

The player then has to climb towers, find keys, explore tech cities, explore mountains, fight a variety of enemies in an arena, participate in competitions, move boulders, and lots of other activities. Interesting to note how physics is a very important part of the gameplay, as various things will require you to understand the response of the game in order to be played in the best way.

Beebz is still a platforming heroine who makes herself respected, and for that she gets new skills every time it completes a zone. These keep the user’s curiosity high and offer further solutions to level design and interaction with enemies and objects.

Unfortunately, not everything that glitters is gold, starting withmandatory to face the difficult versions of the levels. As interesting as it is to revisit a stage with a different layout and new collectibles, there are players who may prefer to reach the end credits simply by playing the normal versions of all the stages present. This obligation seems to us only an artificial way to increase longevity, when to tell the truth it is not felt the need.

At the same time the secondary activities offered in the Hub World prove to be those less interesting or fun, giving more of a feeling of frustration than anything else. Elements such as carrying a ball from one side of one level to another fail to entertain at the right point, and it is very likely that many will prefer to skip certain events. The extra items unlockable with the collected cakes, however, are not exactly the best.

In addition to the classic moveset improvements for Beebz, it is possible to change the color of the hair and clothes to thus vary your wardrobe. One last criticism we address to common enemies, who attack with patterns that are too predictable and in many ways similar to each other. We understand that the goal is not to waste too much time, but a good variety of them could offer further quality to the product.

A unique style

In conclusion of the review, speaking of the purely artistic side and visual, Demon Turf manages to leave a good impression on the player. Inspired by fan game classics such as Sonic Robo Blast 2, the game recreates a peculiar aesthetic within a three-dimensional environment. The resulting effect is somehow timeless, thus managing to be current from here to an unidentifiable future.

Demon Turf

The character design it is simple and functional at the same time, since it conveys the character of each character with a simple glance. Also there soundtrack it is well made, with traces that easily enter the user’s head. Finally, we report the lack of bugs or problematic glitches of sorts, as well as good compatibility with regard to the Steam version we tested.
