The opposition demands his resignation, but Giorgia Meloni blocks him. The Undersecretary of Justice, Andrea Delmastro, he will be tried for revelations of official secrecy in relation to the case of the anarchist Alfredo Cospito: the decision was taken by the investigating judge of Rome, Maddalena Cipriani after a two-hour hearing, confirming the choice made in July by the investigating judge Emanuela Attura. The news of the postponement rings the alarm bells at Palazzo Chigi, also because the Pd, M5S and Avs immediately ask the Chamber for the ‘head’ of the government representative in Via Arenula. Meloni, however, doesn’t agree, he defends his loyalist and invites his parliamentarians to rally around him.
FdI squares up, the reactions to Via della Scrofa
Around Via della Scrofa they are keen to underline that the work of the judiciary must be respected but they clearly make it clear that there is something wrong if Delmastro is sent to trial after the request for non-prosecution by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office . If the deputy prosecutor Ielo asks for acquittal and then Delmastro is put on trial, it means that there are two different lines, ask yourself a question and give yourself an answer, says a big Melonian in Transatlantico, in Montecitorio, half-heartedly, raising his arms.
“I think it is unusual to be sent to trial after the request not to proceed by the public prosecutor”, cuts short Giovanbattista Fazzolari, undersecretary of the Presidency of the Council with responsibility for the implementation of the program and one of the men closest to Meloni, replying to the Democratic Party who asked for a motion of no confidence in Delmastro: “The Dems – explains Fazzolari to Adnkronos – have every right to present a motion of no confidence, it is within their possibilities. But obviously the no confidence in Delmastro will end in nothing, because the undersecretary will obtain the full confidence of Parliament”. However, Fazzolari glosses over when asked whether the preliminary hearing judge’s decision on Delmastro should be read as a new ’round’ in the stormy relationship between the judiciary and the government.
Along the same lines, Tommaso Foti: “We are close personally and as a parliamentary group to our friend Andrea in the certainty that in the trial he will demonstrate the unfoundedness of the accusations made against him”. The Fdi group leader in the Chamber warns: “If an indictment is enough to revive the never-dormant souls of justice lawyers in effective permanent service, we are proud to be aligned on the opposite front of a left devoid of ideas and the fundamental principles of the rule of law …”.
Foti does not send them to say to the Democratic Party: “As for the exhumation of a motion with which we would like the Prime Minister to ask for Delmastro’s resignation, we are available to discuss it tomorrow too, but Schlein’s megaphones can rest assured that it will fall to nothing in fact, the undersecretary has the full confidence of Parliament”. And if, with closed notebooks, there are those who do not disdain the expression ‘clockwork justice’, officially the Melonians deny the attempt to trace Delmastro’s indictment to the alarm about the judicial opposition to the centre-right government launched by Guido Crosetto. It is the Minister of Defense himself who ‘dismantles’ this connection: “I was talking about something completely different, about a question of principle not about specific cases…”.
The opposition forcefully requests a clarification, in the parliament, from the head of the Defense Ministry, for the statements made to Corriere della Sera last November 26: “The opposition asked me to report to the Anti-Mafia or to Copasir. I gave my availability and then they told me it wasn’t good. Now there is another urgent request (I don’t know from which group) and, as soon as I return from abroad, I will go and respond”, the minister with FDI share reiterates to Adnkronos.
Delmastro and the support of the allies
Delmastro also receives the support of the allies. From Naples, in the evening, the deputy prime minister and Italy’s number one Antonio Tajani made his voice heard, replying to the Democratic Party: “Every day they ask for someone’s resignation. Resignation is a serious matter. In the Italian system and in any liberal democracy innocent until there is a final conviction, here there was even a confrontation between the prosecutor’s office and the magistrate who requested the indictment, so imagine that. There are different opinions, I am a guarantee for anyone, for any political force belongs, be it my ally or my political opponent…”. “Delmastro must not resign, there will be a judgment and then we’ll see”, assures Raffale Nevi, national spokesperson for Fi.
Solidarity is also coming from the League. Matteo Salvini remains silent for now and his undersecretary for Justice, Andrea Ostellari, speaks: “I regret the news of Andrea Delmastro’s indictment. Now the trial must take place quickly, in the appropriate places and not in the newspapers. The guaranteeism is an absolute and mandatory principle. It is sad to see that the left applies it, once again, with alternating current”.
