Bathco BM Torrelavega was defeated 30-34 by a Bidasoa Irun team that was clearly superior in the 40×20. The team of the returnee Álex Mozas dominated the entire clash on a day in which the Orange Squadron did not find its best version and was in tow during the 60 minutes.
The match began with Asier Nieto’s 0 – 1 score. Álex Rubiño was in charge of lifting Trueba for the first time with a direct draw against Maciel’s squad. The connection with the pivot was shown early on as a lethal weapon for Bidasoa Irun, although Jakub Prokop did the same for the locals.
Two consecutive goals from Rodrigo Salinas allowed the Basques’ first +2. A great orange combination ended with Jokin Aja very free, but his shot went over. Salinas would not waste the +3 ball. Prokop and Nieto distributed missed shots and, already in the 8th minute, Jakub Prokop made it 3 – 5. Leo Tercariol’s debut was not made effective by Bathco BM Torrelavega. Bidasoa Irun had to miss again so that, with a manual first wave, Jokin Aja shot Maciel.
The game had begun in disarray and Álex Mozas’s men had up to two +3 balls, well aborted by the orange wall. On the contrary, Cuétara’s men were not able to transform their attacks. The exchange of blows and errors was identical, allowing the Bidasotarras to stay ahead on the scoreboard, but not escape. Tercariol was successful again with a ball over passive, but Maciel prevented Aja’s goal. The Argentine’s stop became 5 – 8 for Salinas.
Around the 15th minute, Jevtic was excluded for pushing Isi Martínez during the throw. Javi Muñoz made a good penalty. Tercariol tried to take advantage of the Basque loss, but their shot into an empty goal ended up wide. The Brazilian redeemed it with a save and Juanjo Fernández closed the game to 1. Rodrigo Salinas added one more at the moment when the inferiority was consumed.
Maciel continued with good numbers and, in the other goal, Juanjo Fernández committed a penalty. Cavero’s Vaseline attempt was caught by Tercariol, who verified the hardness of the sticks in his celebration. Guilherme Linhares made it 8 – 9, short-lived before Da Silva’s response. Linhares ran into Maciel in a new attempt seconds before Nicolai Colunga was excluded.
It was the 19th minute of the match and Cavero materialized the superiority with the 8 – 11 score. Marko Jurkovic resolved the subsequent attack between Maciel’s legs. It would still give Nieto time to guess one more in superiority. Linhares would cut back with a cross shot to the post. The very high pace of the match continued as time approached the break. Marcio Silva would send a shot wide in an action in which Trueba claimed a penalty. The insistence came to nothing and Boskos raised the score to 10 – 14. The +4, along with the 23rd minute of the game, was enough for Jacobo Cuétara to call the first timeout of the game.
After the break, a forced Linhares collided with Maciel. Esteban Salinas punished from the pivot. An offensive foul by Silva almost ended in +6, but Nieto’s shot was rejected by the defense. With the extra life, Muñoz scored a target. Bidasoa Irun continued to hit practically all of his attacks while the oranges usually found themselves with Maciel. The result of this, 3 minutes from the end of the first half, was 11 – 17 and the second timeout for Jacobo Cuétara.
The team did not have an immediate response either. Tercariol supported his team in another play, but Maciel was impenetrable. With 1 minute left and the scoreboard not having moved, Álex Mozas stopped the clock. The good orange defense met with luck and Esteban Salinas found a rebound in his hands. In a display of rage, Isidoro Martínez burst the net just before the horn sounded. That sound would come with 12 – 18 on the scoreboard.
The start of the second half did not improve Torrelaveguense’s prospects. A goal from Gey-Emparan and two errors in attack were the first plays after the restart. Jokin Aja went to the bench for 2 minutes for an action identical to that of a visiting player seconds before. None of that mattered to Salinas who put the +8. Prokop made it 13 – 20 to calm the waters and Tercariol aborted an inferior shot, inspiring Torrelavega with faith.
Marcio caused Matheus to be excluded, including a penalty. Javi Muñoz went to the line only to meet Skrzyniarz. A new save by Tercariol was not enough either, as Isi Martínez encountered Maciel. On the third the play did go well and Juanjo Fernández made it 14 – 20. A steal by Fernández himself launched Facundo Cangiani to get within 5.
Bidasoa Irun committed passive, further exalting a fired-up Vicente Trueba. The good defense and the success of Gey-Emparan put a stop to the emotion. Colunga penetrated to get it right and get Da Silva’s 2 minutes. Gorka Nieto forced a penalty that he scored himself. Cangiani responded instantly and, after a long attack, Bidasoa Irun recovered the seventh man. Salinas was unsuccessful in his shot and Prokop, with a sensational break, made it 18 – 22.
Silva counterattacked Nieto’s response, earning a penalty. Angel surpassed Skrzyniarz. In the 43rd minute, the orange tide grew and Mozas stopped the clock. The local improvement in defense was evident but Mozas’ men continued to find holes. Boskos and Maciel raised the level of difficulty to the comeback. The last quarter of an hour of the game started with the visitors’ score at +6 and their hopes increasingly ethereal.
The static nature of the light did not predict any signs of a comeback, but a counter from Cangiani tried to alleviate that. With 21 – 27, after a success by Zabala, Cuétara consumed his interventions. The Asturian’s 7:6 was neutralized first by Maciel and then by Boskos with a goal from his area. The good will and determination of the people of Torrelaveguense was not enough, and with each mistake, the mountain became higher. Theodoros Boskos received a 4-minute suspension after a foul on Lombilla and the subsequent protest to Escudero. The situation with 6 minutes left woke up the orange stands.
Nieto’s shot to the crossbar and Marcio’s goal, for 26 – 32, was to continue rowing for a game that was approaching its end. The Torrelaveguense outburst, despite continuing to score goals, was going to end up consumed by the clock. The final horn sounded with 30 – 34 reigning at the top of the Vicente Trueba.
Second defeat in the Plenitude League for Bathco BM Torrelavega, which is now changing its chip again with its sights set on Novi Sad, Serbia, where it will face HC Vojvodina next Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. in the third game of the group stage of the EHF European League.
