At least nine people were killed in a boat accident in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday, according to Italian authorities.
According to the Italian Coast Guard, a boat with more than 30 migrants on board capsized about 30 nautical miles (55 kilometers) southeast of the island of Lampedusa in international waters.
Despite the difficult conditions, patrol boats were able to transport many people on board, according to the Coast Guard.
However, some migrants died of hypothermia on their way to Lampedusa. The authorities said on Wednesday evening that 23 survivors had been counted after their arrival on the Italian island.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported that one of the 23 people who managed to reach the beach later died. Six people are receiving emergency medical treatment. The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear.
