Five paramedics died during the passage of Hurricane Noro in the Philippines when they were in a flooded town, authorities announced Monday.
“The local government has deployed them to a flooded area,” said Colonel Romualdo Andres, police chief for San Miguel, near Manila.
The official in charge of natural disasters in San Miguel Renan Herrera said they most likely drowned in the flood of a river.
On Sunday, Typhoon Noru hit the densely populated island of Luzon, and was accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain.
The typhoon made landfall on Sunday at 17:30 local time (09:30 GMT) in the city of Bordeos on the Polillo Islands of Quezon Prefecture.
The hurricane was accompanied by winds of 195 kilometers per hour, the strongest recorded this year in the country.
About 75,000 people were evacuated before the typhoon, after the meteorological department warned of the dangers of major floods in areas of the country prone to such phenomena.
On Monday, no major damage was immediately observed.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said, “We may think we have over-measured. But there are no over-measures when it comes to natural disasters.”
