The White House said on Thursday (11) that the military aid that the United States had been providing to Ukraine had “completely stopped” due to the lack of an agreement in Congress to continue supporting the country in the face of Russia's invasion.
“The assistance we were providing until now has been completely halted,” White House spokesman John Kirby said at a news conference.
The future of US aid to Ukraine is currently being decided in Congress, where the Democratic Party – led by the country's president, Joe Biden – has a majority in the Senate and the Republican Party – led by former president Donald Trump – controls the House of Representatives.
Biden asked Congress to approve additional aid of more than US$55 billion (R$267.8 billion) for Kiev, but the Republican opposition said it will only approve the new aid package if Democrats agree to implement a series of measures on the US-Mexico border to stem the rise of illegal migration.
Kirby used Thursday's news conference to again urge Republicans to approve aid to Ukraine, especially after U.S. intelligence concluded that Russia was using North Korean ballistic missiles in some of its latest attacks on Ukraine. “The attacks that the Russians are carrying out are only increasing. And now they are using North Korean ballistic missiles to carry them out,” she emphasized.
According to the White House spokesman, Moscow fired at least one of these ballistic missiles at Ukraine on December 30, 2023 and also launched several North Korean ballistic missiles on January 2 of this year as part of another attack on Ukraine. infrastructure of Ukraine.
These missiles were part of Russia's attacks on Ukraine in late 2023 and early this year.
The United States, the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine, has provided Kiev with US$44.2 billion (R$214 billion) in military aid since the start of the war, according to State Department data. (With EFE Agency)
