As we reported to you yesterday, the journalist and leaker Jeff Grubb has indicated that Electronic Arts and EA Motive are not working on Dead Space 2 Remake and that the project was shelved because sales of the first remake were poor. However, EA responded by stating that the reports it is incorrect. In “closing,” Grubb replied that we can believe who we want, but he believes that when a company denies a report without clarifying how it is incorrect, something doesn't add up.
Now, a more reliable source than Grubb has weighed in: Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. The journalist has been sharing information on the gaming market correctly for years, thanks to many sources within the teams. What he said is not official, but it is extremely credible and always very precise.
Schreier now states that the saga of Dead Space is actually on hiatus. The decision, however, is not new, as it was already taken last year when sales of the first remake did not reach expectations. Schreier explains that in reality the team was not working on the remake of the second chapter, but was trying to lay the foundations for a new chapter. Plans for such a game were never greenlit and quickly fell through.
As of last summer, a small group of developers is working on “something new” (not related to Dead Space) while the bulk of the team works on other projects (Iron Man and Battlefield, as we already know).
Schreier's full report
Schreier wrote: “Electronic Arts Inc. put the Dead Space series on hold for the second timedespite releasing a critically acclaimed remake last year that seemed to breathe new life into the troubled video game franchise.”
“Although news of the sci-fi horror series' shelving broke this week, according to people familiar with the project, EA had already made the decision last spring. Hopes for a new Dead Space game from EA were derailed after sales of the remake failed to meet the company's expectations, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly.”
“After finishing the Dead Space remake, released in January 2023, a small team at Electronic Arts subsidiary Motive spent a few months conceive ideas for a new chapter in the series. But these plans were never given the green light and collapsed before they could get very far. Since last summer, that team has been exploring other ideas, while the bulk of the developers who worked on Dead Space have moved on to different projects.”
