The universe of Sandman begins to take shape, even if it does so in a rather particular way: if in fact the series Netflix had given us a taste of his world, made up of otherworldly entities, mysteries so great that they cannot be explained and a truly unique and particular mythology, while we await the second season and the return of DreamNetflix has released the first season of Dead Boy Detectivesa production with decidedly different colors – closer to the teenage audience – which tells the story of a strange detective agency.
Departed Detectives
These 8 episodes, available all together from today, tell the story of two young boys, Edwin Paine (George Rextrew), a boy born in the early 1900s and killed for a silly demonic ritual, and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), a kid from the '90s who hasn't fared much better.
The two boys, running away from time to time Death – who we see return even if briefly with the face already seen in Sandman Kirby Howell-Baptiste – and from the Missing Persons office, solving one case after another which often centers on the supernatural and the inexplicable.
Joining the carousel of these 8 episodes will be interesting characters like Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), a decidedly one-of-a-kind Japanese girl, Jenny, the owner of a strange building and butcher's shop (Briana Cuoco) and many other interesting apparitions, possible allies or enemies of our boys. However, the duo's co-protagonist is Crystal Palace, a character played by Kassius Nelson who, after a series of events, finds himself accompanying the two boys through various vicissitudes.
Among the secondary characters who shine with their own light we undoubtedly find the trio formed by Ruth Connell, Jenn Lyon And Kukas Gage, who play characters who will color the highly characterized undergrowth of this first season set in America. I also applaud those characters who really have little space on the screen, but who nevertheless manage to come out characterized in an exceptional way: for example Tragic Mick (Michael Beach), an ex-walrus trapped in a human form, or the two sprites. Not to mention the cats, which have always been a source of interest for Gaiman, which have a lot of importance in these episodes.
One case leads to another
Dead Boy Detectives it's nothing innovative: if it weren't for the world in which it is set, a universe with precise and punctual world building, it would be a normal supernatural teen series. During the 8 episodes one case will lead to another, pushing the horizontal plot forward while the case of the episode stirs the ingredients in the pot a little.
The fact of being a production launched all together on the platform leads inexorably to giving more importance to horizontal texturewith changes in the status quo and choices made by the characters that will directly influence the individual case, and not vice versa.
The choice then was to avoid having a single skein to untangle, but on the contrary inside there will be many subplots and plots which, to be honest, are cleverly fitted together making everything very credible.
We are therefore decidedly distant from the first appearance of the Defunct Detectives, which already occurred with other faces within Doom Patrolwhere in that case it was only a speck within the delirious world of the series, but which instead in this Netflix manages to take its space, even more than what is done in print.
All in all therefore, the series has its audience and knows who to aim for: this means that, most likely, that bite that Sandman he was able to give here it transforms into something else, where the wonder in the first conquered, the lightness, teen horror hey fast dialogues they become the driving force of the latter, effectively proposing something different, very different, but not necessarily evil.
And now?
The series hasn't been renewed yet, but if it goes well we'll probably see ours again Dead Boy Detectives. And while Sandman prepares to return in its second season, let's remember that in the panorama of his universe there are many characters still to be discovered, even some linked to the Departed Detectives like Tim Hunter.
The fact that this very creative universe is so varied that it can provide space for many different productions shows the potential with which Netflix And Gaiman they could really launch the other parallel series, delving into stories that have had little space in comics. And who knows, maybe from this we could see the return of a John Constantine, the arrival of The Merlin or, even, a beautiful series dedicated to Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer.
