Dave The Diver it’s not an indie game and shouldn’t be treated as such. In fact, people should stop calling it theindies of the year and to use it as a touchstone of other indie titles, since it has a big one behind it multinational.
This was stated by the independent developer and streamer SplattercatGaming on X, who underlined some aspects of Dave the Diver that had escaped the general public and beyond. In fact, by observing the official website of Mintrocket, the development studio, it is easy to discover that it is a label of the giant Nexona multinational company active in the sector since 1994.
What is indie?
“People should stop saying Dave the Diver is the indie of the year. Come on, this shit was funded by Nexon, lol. Nowadays there are so many big publishers hiding their billion dollar influence behind some Of pixel art, that the word indie doesn’t mean anything anymore.” said Splattercat, who then explained: “There’s this thing called a subsidiary that the big corporations are using to fool you with nostalgia and pixel art. As always in life, MBAs and white-collar workers came along and ruined everything.”
Basically, for Splattercat we are talking about real parasites: “It’s an important issue because every time an ordinary person finds a way to support himself, by staying on the sidelines, these people arrive who suck up every last penny, so much so that they lose to the thing all profitability.”
Splattercat is also aware that it is not easy to see Nexon behind Dave the Diver: “I fell for it too, so don’t take it badly. However, if I ever hear someone saying stuff like: “This indie game should have the Dave’s characteristics,” I’m going to lose my temper. Dave was created by one of the biggest companies on the planet, but in the indie hat.”
Finally, Splattercat concludes, explaining why no one exposes himself on the subject: “No one ever posts like this because they can make you lose opportunity futures. The whole industry is infested with this mentality that invites you to live with certain situations in order not to burn your bridges, which honestly made me really tired. I say this because I’m already on the edge of nowhere.”
In a subsequent post Splattercat admits that Dave the Diver is still a very fun game, as also emerged from our review, but according to him this is not the point. The point is that it is still the product of a multinational company, which should not be confused with an indie game just because it has been disguised as one.
