A group of American and European technology and heritage specialists has secured 1,500 websites, digital exhibits and archives and other online resources of Ukrainian cultural organizations since March 1. That reports Artnet News.
The scientists named their rescue operation Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO) and have mapped the successful operations on the website sucho.org†
In a war situation, it is wise to back up data and keep it in a safe place, Quinn Dombrowski, a technology specialist at Stanford University, wrote in an email to Artnet News. “People forget that the Internet is made up of physical things.” The war threatens servers and cables and can cause websites to go offline temporarily or permanently.
Since its launch on March 1, SUCHO has secured a total of three terabytes of data from Ukrainian cultural institutions.
After a call on Twitter, more than a thousand volunteers joined SUCHO. These are IT people, librarians, archivists and other professionals in the field of cultural heritage. The project received emergency grants from two major organizations: the Association for Computers and the Humanities and the European Association for Digital Humanities. The companies Amazon Web Service and DigitalOcean, a US cloud infrastructure provider, provided technical support.
